Like 'em or hate 'em?
I work at a private, all girls high school and it's common knowledge even to me that the school isn't lacking in funds. Generally, a great place to work. But, the accountant is such a d-bag it makes my head spin. He won't even give me 20,000W for summer camp class prizes.
What about yours? |

You want to give cash prizes? Or you expect your school to fund YOUR prizes for the kids?
If it's such a small amount, why not just foot the bill yourself instead of calling someone else a "d-bag?" Oh wait, you probably didn't think of this because maybe you're not fond of looking in the mirror to see what YOU are to others. |

My administrator hooked me up when I moved into my apartment last year (The bedding they'd provided was scratchy and not warm, so they got me a fantastic cotton quilt and cotton fitted sheets. My coteacher also took me shopping for a kitchen-table set and got them to approve spending a bit more on a granite-topped table, which I hadn't asked for but she liked ).
This year, they did mess up a curtain situation (Installing curtains in my old apartment instead of the one I was moving into! I actually blame the building manager for lying to her), but a hundred bucks out of my pocket wasn't the end of the world, as we get along really nicely.
I've promised my 6th graders (who are taking the national exam tomorrow) that the top 2 of the 6 classes* will get a Dunkin Donuts party. This will come out of my pocket, but it's great motivation. Little do they know that we won't get the test results until November I'll still hold up my end of the deal.
*Only if the average score is 80% or higher, of course. I did tell them this. |

Quit being cheap. If you want to do something special it comes out of your pocket. It's the same way anywhere |

We do that most of the time, but it's a national exam. I really want to motivate them. They end up policing themselves. I made them promise to go to bed early tonight, study, and eat breakfast tomorrow. |

Except if their average score is 79% and they find out who messed up their party. Then you may have a dead student on your hands. |

The school pays for big stuff, like prizes for speech contests and whatnot, but I agree with the other posters that little stuff like this is your responsibility to pay for and not the school. Responsibility is the wrong word, but if you want to do extra stuff you should pay for it. Teachers at home spend hundreds of dollars of their own money to make their classes special. |

I'm about to shell out 5M in key money for a new place.
Every won counts these days, but thanks for your advice. |

you gotta learn to play this game with tact...
i once taught at this institution and the students got incentives of varying degrees depending on their performance.... with a side-line lesson on "Work Hard....Play Hard and get Rewarded for your Efforts".... afterwards the news spread like wild fire in a dry marijuana patch.... Everyone got "high" on the idea and since then they have a special budget put aside for these special times... i'm talking huge money....for prizes, snacks, dinners, and just any other liquid idea you got floating in your head...

Yeah, I can understand you wanting a budget from the school, but I agree with the others. Take it out of your pocket, it will work out better for you in the long run.
I told all my students when I started that the best groups in each class would get a pizza party. I can do that because I am in a small school and only have approx 24 students in total who will make it to the Pizza party.
I expect to pay approx 60,000+ won for it all. Though, they have been working towards it since I got here. The Head teacher seems to like the idea of rewarding the best students in each class, so no grief from them.
I also know that 60,000 -100,000 is chump change when you consider the benefits of having students motivated to listen to the teacher next term. If it helps motivate them, then the money isn't the issue.
Stay here long enough and you will see payback for the personal efforts you put into your work. Just my 10 wons input. |

Exactly. I figure I'll spend about 80-100k on donuts and juice for 2 classes of 30ish, but I'm hoping it was enough motivation to get them to forgo the late-night video games, crack open a book for an hour or so, and do a decent job of the national exam.
Usually I just give out oranges or random small fruit, but once or twice a year it's a nice treat for the kids, and usually motivates many, if not all of them. |
