Please don't say things like that. My hopes are all gotten up now, although I have been told there are no classes on Friday. Though I don't know if that is linked to my growing status as a persona non grata.

It's not a red day on the calendar. If it were a red day this Saturday, it would mean Saturday is a national holiday. Sunday August 15th is the next red day holiday, but that doesn't make Monday the 16th a holiday. Ah well, I'm on vacation at that time anyhow. Because the 4th of July American holiday fell on Sunday this year, it did make Monday the 5th a holiday over there.

Some general advice for some people. NEVER ASSUME!

Short answer: NO to vacation on Friday

Long Answer: Never Assume just because you think it should work out that way, it will. Try Chusok or Solnal. Every once in while you get the 3 days fall on a Tuesday,Wednesday,Thursday. Now you think... hey since three days are already off the schools will be empty on Monday and Friday so lets make it a long vacation week. But dollars to donuts you come in on either day you will have most or all of your students.

Another example - it is raining cats and dogs and small cars. You drag yourself to work thinking only a few students will be at school. But you get there - BAM - every bloody kid is there.

If you think something will be one way, because of some event. Wrong here in Korea-nope! They can so surprise you!

You are right. About 2 weeks after I got to Korea, it snowed and was slippery. What I seen upon stepping out the apartment at 8AM were motor bikes fishtailing around and ladies in high heels precariously making their way to work along with shop keepers sweeping at the snow that was still coming down. Half of all of us were also sick at the time, but everyone was present and accounted for.

As for the 3 day holiday in September falling on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, my co-teacher said it's not a long weekend when I asked about that a few weeks ago though she said everyone wishes it were. I had on my mind of doing a short Japan or China trip just to see what what it's like in China or Japan.
