Kim Jong-il, North Koreas leader and a known soccer fan, may be behind the North Korean World Cup teams humiliating 7-0 defeat to Portugal.
The South Korean daily Chosun IIbo said a report from Radio Free Asia revealed that Mr. Kims entry into the world of coaching followed his countrys defeat to Brazil. Although they lost 2-1, the North Koreans put up a remarkable showing.
The papers online English edition said RFA quoted a source as saying, After watching the match against powerhouse Brazil, in which North Korea recorded a respectable 1-2 loss with a tight defence strategy, Kim Jong-il said that although the team played the first half well, it lost because it only focused on defence in the second half. He then gave orders for the teams defenders to be positioned forward and even specified where each defender should be standing in the field.
The source said Mr. Kims orders were then relayed to South Africa and implemented.
Before North Koreas World Cup game with Brazil a reporter asked the team coach whether Kim Jong-il had any say in the selection of the players.
Before coach Kim Jong-hun could answer a FIFA official cut the reporter off, reminding journalists not to ask political questions.
It is not known how the loss will affect the teams reception back in North Korea.
One defector, an ex-North Korea coach, said poor play overseas has meant punishment back home, including being purged and sent to coal mines.
The present coach has dismissed such reports and said there would be no punishments.
Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose; it doesnt always turn out the way you want. But there are going to be no further consequences, he told reporters.

Seriously? I mean, I imagine that the athletes might take a butt-chewing when they get home, but coal mines? Geez, I wonder what happens when Kim Jong-il's ol' lady screws up the kimchi? |

It's not at all far fetched to think that N. Korea's failed jocks will be sent to the coal mines.
You see, North Korea doesn't have salt mines. |

Seems to me that lousy athletes could be sent to, oh, I don't know, maybe a gym? Made to run laps? Pushups? Not sent to Rura Penthe. Geez. |

You are making the assumption that Kim Jong-il is a logical person. Which is realllyyyy a stretch. |

Great book that everyone should read - "Somewhere Inside" by Lisa and Laura Ling. Laura was held captive in North Korea, and it's their recounting of how they got Laura back home. |
