Soo...for those of you in public schools, I'm wondering about your extra classes that happen at night.
This past semester I've been teaching an extra class for like 20,000 won an hour. I love teaching, am certified back home, and wanted to give the guys the extra help. However, I'm starting to think about next semester. The class requires me to stay at school until almost 9 pm because it starts so late (so it's a 12 hour day). It's a course on debate and persuasive writing, so I actually have to do a lot of prep and a lot of marking as well. Maybe I sound super greedy, I dunno, but it seems like a lot of work and time for what equals out to be like $17/hour.
Would you/do you do something similar to this? |

They could offer 50,000 won an hour.
100,000 won an hour. I wouldn't take it. I value my free time over money.
If I wanted money, I would have studied law or be working my ass off at a high-end hagwon in Gangnam |

I voted yes since this is exactly what I've been doing during my working day up until about 3 weeks ago. I didn't like having to pay a 77,000 facility fee when they expected of me to take on after-school classes. |

Sometimes I do the extras for less than I feel they're worth, but I have been paid as high as 36K, basically just to come in 30 mins early.
20K st 9PM would be outside of my limits. They would need to throw in dinner at that price. At least.
Anyways, you have fulfilled your obligations this term, you can always politely decline next term, citing the need to "take a rest." |

Within my regular 9 to 5 work hours (if I must deskwarm), I'll work for 25K. But after 5 I won't teach for less than 40K. |

Hell no...minimum 25,000, realistically I'd like 30,000. |

Minimum is 30K to keep me at school after 5.
Both Public School teaching gigs I held paid me that. |

I'm at 35K. Maybe I got lucky in my first public school job but now It'll be a standard since they set it |

The standard for my school is 20,000 before 5pm, 30,000 after 5pm. Quite frankly, I'd rather have the time off but I do teach six months out of the year for 20,000/hr for an hour a day.
And no amount of money (that they would pay, anyway) would bring me in on a weekend or evening. |

9 to 9?
Holy ****!
I wouldn't do it for anything less than 25,000 within the normal 9-4:30 time frame.
I used to do a district organized program for 50,000 than had me finishing around 6:30 once a week. |

Not a hope - not for 25k, not for 50k.

I teach a couple of extra classes during school hours. Happened this way due to grades 3 and 4 getting an extra class per week. I could have refused, but it just would have damaged my pristine rep at the school and I really don't mind--keeps me from deskwarming. And I know my school isn't particularly rich. Yes, I'm only making 20 grand an hour, but I think it was the right thing to do. But after school, the minimum would be 50 grand--and that's if I like the students a lot! |

Some job adds (and surely, contracts) are paying 20K for overtime.
Should I ask for 25K? 30K?
I don't want to undercut myself, but I don't want to ask for too much.
It's my first time teaching in Korea. |

Denali,
The main question you have to ask is, "Do they have someone else to do it?"
If the answer is "yes", then try to bargain a little.
If the answer is "no", then go for whatever you think you can get. In the end, no matter what they're paying you, they're lucky you're doing it and you're doing them a favour you don't have to do. Find a way to get some benefit in some way.
Just one man's opinion. |
