Hi,

I rarely post on here but this time I need some serious help. I recently moved out of a place that I briefly shared with another gyopo (I am one as well). I was given back the remaining rent I had paid up front but was told that the security deposit would be returned to me within a week. Well that was 3 weeks ago, my former roommate is not answering calls, emails, or textsneedless to say I think she is trying to run off with my 400,000 deposit. Is there anything I can legally do because we both have F4 visas? I speak very little Korean (I have friends that speak fluently), is this something I can go to the police or building owner about? I am not an English teacher here, but a graduate student who is doing research here in Korea on a fixed budget. If I lose this money its going to seriously hurt. Thanks in advance.

also I know that she reads and frequents this forum, in the event that there is nothing I can do I will gladly post her information so you can steer clear of her.

I you have a receipt, which you should have, then take her to small
claims court. However the paperwork, translator and fees would well
exceed 400,000KRW.

On the bright side your 400,000KRW is peanuts. My key money is
50,000,000KRW. I have a friend and his is 180,000,000KRW.

Do you know where this person is going? Do you know address etc.?

Let me get this in before the more goody2shoes answers get in...

I'm out of the country (and have never visited Korea), but just a question. If you can't get in contact with her, what makes you think the authorities will be able to track her down?

If you can get in contact with her, then you need to "man-up" and go take your money. IT IS YOUR MONEY.

P.S.- If you are a female, you can still "man-up"

No offense, but what else do you expect when dealing with a gyopo (and I'm one myself)?

I think that you are S.O.L. in terms of getting an authority of any sort to help you. Even if he/she gets back to you and says that they don't owe you the money, there isn't much you can do except get angry.

Chock it off as experience...you got screwed...accept it and get on with life.
MOST people I believe would have also did the same thing as your roommate.....
perhaps you would not have and I know I would have returned the money...still...most would not have. That's life.
If you're gonna sweat over 400,000 Won....

Agreed. This will require some street justice.

OP, I am not taking sides and not saying this is the situation, just wondering.......

Did you two move in together, and was this your share of a joint deposit? Is she moving out as well, or staying? If she is staying, is there someone taking your place or does she now have to take on the entire rent herself? If so, you may have to wait until she finds a replacement to get your deposit back.

Care to share why the stay was so brief?

Unless you had a mutual understanding otherwise and if so then just forget everything I just said.

Or at the very least internet justice. Post her facebook info.

Why would a gyopo be more likely to rip you off than someone else? I am not saying that this is or isn't true, I am just curious.

I have met quite a few gyopos that were odd and maladjusted (enough to see a pattern) but none of them seemed overly dishonest. Well...except for the guy who scammed all of those people selling games and books.

Unless you have some sort of proof you gave her the security deposit you are SOL.

Do you have a piece of paper both of you signed saying you gave her 400,00w?

Do you have a transaction in your bankbook that shows you deposited 400,000w into her account?

If not then you gotta man up and get your money. Go to her house, demand your money.

I found this place through craigslist (first mistake) and then I paid cash (second mistake). The stay was so brief because she was so dirty and had 3 unkempt dogs in the apartment. I have written out a long detailed explination....again I'm hoping to appeal to some side of her if/when she reads this to give back my deposit money. Wishful thinking maybe....as far as street justice...I suppose I could just camp out her apartment till she needs to leave eventually? Then what? Hit her till she gives me the money? I don't think so...even now I wouldn't even lay a hand on a woman.

- Just got back from her place earlier this morning, it was locked up the locks were changed. I put my ear on the door, banged it few times and asked her to open up....not a soul inside from what I could hear. Going to try again later tonight.
