What does an F5 visa give that an F2 visa doesn't apart from permanent residence?
Does it enhance one's life in Korea much, or is it just a consolidation of what you already have? |

You can vote.
I think that's the whole list right there. But still, you have to admit that's kind of cool. |

No more jumping hoops when Immigration decides to change a policy.
You can use the Korean lines at the airport.
Don't need re-entry permits to exit/return to Korea. |

I upgraded because I did not want to worry about immigration changing the rules.
I don't have to go to immigration every two years to renew my visa.
However, the biggest reason for myself was it means I don't have to pay 50,000 each year for a reentry permit.
Extra benefit after I got it was that SKT would give me a regular contract phone with no deposit and no hassles. I just showed him my visa and poof I had a phone.
Other than that, I have not found much different.
BTW, as a F2 I always used the Korean lines at the airport. |

But, here's the crunch: If you go over one year away and if you haven't applied for some re-entry thing you lose the F5.
It's not really as permanent as people make it out to be ... |

For an F-5, is the language exam a legal requirement for those married to Koreans? |

True. No. But your immi clerk may get antsy if you apply for an F5 without any of the old hangeulmal. Just my experience. |

I was chiding tob about the "use the Korean line at the airport" thing.
Usually, the Korean lines are much, much longer. |

You NEVER have to go back to immigration ever again
You CANNOT be deported
You can vote (which is hilarious when the people just stare at you when you put the ballot inthe box & they have the WTF???expression )
You have no restrictions at ALL. You can do anything a Korean can.
If your spouse dies by accident or illness, you don't lose your visa.
And again...you NEVER have to go back to immigration ever again.
YOU own your visa, on an F-2 your SPOUSE owns your visa. You HAVE restrictions.
You can leave for upto 2 years and still keep your residency.
F-5 is FAR better than an F-2. |

Okay... so since no one posted them I called up immigration and got a list of documents needed.
To go from your F-2-1 to the F-5 you need the following:
Passport (여권)
ARC (외국인등록증)
Letter of reference (신원보증서) --> Download at immigration website
Bank deposit for 30 million or proof of employment (은행 계좌 금액 3천만원 이상 or 제직증명서) --> From your bank or work
Proof of marriage (혼인관계증명서) --> 동사무소
주민등록등본 (For your spouse and children) --> 동사무소
Family relationship certificate (가족관계증명서) --> 동사무소
Then you need to pay 50,000 won. --> Outta your wallet, bring cash.
They didnt say anything about speaking the Korean but I was talking to the lady in Korean so maybe she just figured Id be fine. |
