Ive been accepted for a Hagwon school.

Severance Pay One month salary after completion of 1 year contract
Health Insurance Shared 50% coverage of medical insurance with the company
Vacation Days 10 days of paid holiday + Korean national holidays
Salary 2.2 Million
Overtime payment 20.000
Students Level Elementary to Middle
Class size 10 ~ 12 students

I would teach the class by myself, but with the support of managers.

I know people are typically very down about Hagwons, which is why Im making this post.....things seem pretty legit, though Id be grateful for any comments and input guys. Smile

It is pretty generic job information.

the devil is in the details: READ YOUR CONTRACT!!

Take a look at the contract sticky thread to see what should and what should NOT be in your contract as well as what snake-in-the-grass stuff is slid in there (like taxes at 3.4 or 4.5%) and penalty clauses (which are illegal in a labor contract in Korea).

Yeah, income tax is being levied at:

"Korean income and resident taxes will be withheld. Income tax rate on monthly salary is 3.3%"

"Income tax rate on bonus/ severance payment is 3.3%"

So what, I should walk away then?

It means you are being classed (illegally) as a subcontractor and so you get:

a) to pay double the appropriate tax rate (you won't get your tax refund either)
b) no medical insurance (in spite of it being in your contract)
c) no pension and no contribution matching from the employer.

then you can start looking for the other details... it is a year of your life and money in (or out of) your pocket.

Check the contract sticky thread and you will have a MUCH better idea.

10 days of vacation at a hagwon? That is bad. You will be worked to death, and you will have no time to do anything in Korea except slave at the hagwon.

When they say 10 days of holiday, does that mean exactly what it says on the tin? Are there no half-terms/summer breaks in Korea like there are in the U.S./Europe?

It looks like they are trying to give you worthless private insurance, disguised to look like national insurance in the contract. Or written so ambiguously that you might assume this to be the case.

Typically 10 working days HOWEVER hakwons are not real schools and they usually DON'T take the mid term/summer/winter breaks.

Point in fact, since they are outside of regular school, they often increase their workload during school breaks when the kids have more time to go to hagwan for extra classes (commonly refered to as "intensives").

In small hagwons it is common to have problems scheduling vacation breaks since you may be the only native speaker there and there won't be anyone to cover for you when you are gone.

Hagwons themselves are not ALL so horrible. If you have a good director who is honest, you will most likely have a decent year. The work is NOT hard and you don't get worked TO DEATH. Vacations suck ass. As others have said, READ YOUR CONTRACT. Post it on the contract review and get people to look at it. As long as your director is not trying to bone you on everything, it will be as good or bad as you make it.

My contract has less perks then that even, but the manager and co-workers are great so it's not actually that bad.
Yeah, you will be working just as much during the vacation and your days off will likely be decided by your school and not you.
