I'm doing this intro to debating and I'm trying to come up with expressions that connect sentences, as well as other expressions useful to a debating class (middle school). I've got it all set up I'm just working on some helpful expressions now that I'm going to have translated in a bit, but I'm soliciting this board for other useful expressions that steer us around things other people say (phrases that connect or appropriate or contextualize sentences or quotes by others.)

I've got:

"That's not true."

"You said[A sentence] when actually, [B sentence]"
"You said[A sentence] but in fact, [B sentence]"

"If you look at this example, you can see[A sentence]"

"It's a fact that[A sentence]"
[A sentence]

"The facts show that[A sentence]"

"The evidence shows that[A sentence]"

"How can you say [A sentence] when [B sentence]?"

Thanks in advance for your helpful suggestions.

I would leave this out:

"You know that[A sentence]"
"Everybody knows that[A sentence]"

These are fairly weak in writing and I would suppose in debate too. Maybe "It's common knowledge that" but even then..debates (and essay writing) are supposed to focus on evidence.

I don't teach high levels so some basics might help here as well...furthermore, however, etc.

This collection of resources might help you. Lots of expressions in the various handouts , ppts.

I'd focus on using transitions - not only but especially sequential transitions. First off, first of all..... Furthermore, what's more... etc....

www.truetube.co.uk is a good site for debate materials for high level students.

What style of debate are you teaching? There are different ways to approach depending on if you are doing policy (evidence based, with teams, more formal), parliamentary (non-evidence based, with teams, more interactive), or Lincoln-Douglas (evidence/philosophy based, one on one, more formal).

I have participated in competitive debate in all three styles for nearly ten years, so I'm happy to help however I can!
