Only states and governments can save the planet, we are always told by believers in climate change and supporters of left wing economic policies (which is usually the same individuals).
Also, research and development (although this is absolutely true) is a crucial role for the state. Markets are good for producing and selling goods, but not as good when it comes to R&D. There's no profit in supermassive black holes, to use an extreme example.
You'd think therefore, given its vital role in R&D and saving the planet in particular, that states and governments would be devoting tons of capital to it.
10bn ($13bn) is literally a few bucks per capita/OECD annually. That seems to be how seriously the state takes saving the planet from fossil fuels.
Yes, I know believers will say "higher (for example carbon) taxes are clearly the answer", but I was just surprised to discover what a small amount is presently spent. Public spending is zero sum: gigantic amounts of money spent on welfare benefits and high public sector salaries means a tiny piece of pie left over for energy R&D and other public works that are actually desirable. |

And the R&D done for life-extension is also non-existent as well
btw, your post basically supports the argument in Atlas shrugged.
Only advances in technology can make our lives better, spending money on welfare unfortunately doesn't. |
