I'd like to pick up some colorful oil-on-canvas pieces to decorate my new apartment. I'm very picky about art...is there a good spot in Seoul to shop? Insadong is overpriced...is there a good gallery for student art or something? Closest I've ever come is subway exhibitions, but they tend to be overpriced as well...

There's an awesome art/stationary store at the Namdaemun outdoor marketplace. it's got multiple levels and rooms of art supplies of all kinds. I'm really not all that sure how to get there though....It's at one of the entrances though.

For the sake of clarity, would you mind defining "overpriced"?

How about going to one of the university art departments and buying an original work from a student?

I have bought a few small paintings from Insadong for around 200,000won each. Its not cheap by any means but its not well overpriced. Everything depends on the artist in question.

When you visit a commercial gallery, the gallery will take 50%.

If you purchase straight from an artist, it will be rather less expensive and the money will go straight to the person that actually put the work in.

Try contacting the Seoul Art Collective. They put together shows on their own dime and make pretty worthwhile stuff (as opposed to art-to-match-the-drapes, which is often the only stuff you'll find in insadong and samcheongdong commercial gallery spaces).

I went the cheap route and bought a couple of Art puzzles from the store in COEX. My Vigee-Lebrun is currently sitting 3/4 finished on my coffee table...same as it was at the end of fiscal 2009.
