I have traveled far and wide across the planet and have never been to a country where I encountered worse beer across the board than in Korea.
Out of curiosity, has anyone ever been somewhere that was worse?
I think that Thai beer is pretty bad, but you can get Tiger there for a reasonable price, which is OK, so I think that they're off the hook even though Tiger is from Singapore. |

| The mass produced American domestics are only marginally better, with the exception of Samuel Adams, which is more like an import. But I guess we are off the hook too as there are a ton of pretty good micro brews and also a wide selection of imports at more reasonable prices than here. |

| Russia's beer is pretty shoddy. They sure know how to make their vodka though. |

Oh, I have to disagree there....really crappy beers like Busch or Milwaukee's Best are equivalent to Korean domestics, but a Bud or Coors is WAY better than Korean beer. I am not defending American mass produced beer to be great, but to say that a Budweiser is even remotely in the same league as Korean beer is crazy in my opinion.
That is true about Russia....I was only there for a couple weeks and didn't drink too much beer, but I remember drinking a beer called Baltica or something like that and it was far from memorable. |

Air, you've started an interesting thread, and I don't want to sidetrack it with a one on one debate, but come on, Bud and Coors are WAY better? There is hardly any substantial flavor or character in either one of them, especially Coors, so how could they be WAY better. The only reason I even give them the marginal nod is that they don't give me the hangover I get when I drink Hite. So if you're judging on hangover severity, I agree with you. If you are judging on flavor and character, I disagree-they are in the same league(the Busch League).
Anyway, I stopped drinking American domestics back home about 20 years ago, unless there was no other choice. |

This is what I was going to say, but my laptop blue screened on me (I think it can't handle the heat).
I was going to say, I would as happily have a Max from the big glass bottle as a Budweiser.
The mainstream beers from NZ and Aus are no better. Speights Gold Medal, DB Export and XXXX, VB respectively are all sub par, but widely drunk beers. I would struggle to tell the difference in a blind taste test if you threw in two Korean beers.
Sam Adams is by far the best mass market beer I have ever tasted. |

Where's the survey?
Opinions on beer are very much like *mod edit*, everybody has one. Here's mine.
Tiger Beer is only slightly better than Hite. Both are better than Bud. Chang is the best Thai beer, but only the domestic version at 6.4%. Try it on the rocks. It really beats the Thai heat.
Chang export at 5% is almost as bad as Singha, a truely shite beer.
The Indian, Russian and Chinese beers I've tasted, except Tsingtao, are for the most part, watery crap.
I'm glad my fridge is fully loaded with Tsingtao, San Miguel, Sam Adams, Becks, Blue Moon and 5,0.
If I was back in California, I don't think any of the beers I've mentioned in this post would be in my fridge, unless it was some super sale.
Speaking of which, last time I was back, I was buying 30 packs of Tecate cans for $16.99.
That's about the same price Costco Korea sells a 12 pack of Miller Lite for. What a joke.
Recommendations for beer in Korea, without breaking the bank:
Tesco Premium Lager (made in Holland, but, not by Grolsch)
Emart and Lotte Mart carry Oettinger Weizen. Can be found on sale for under 2,000 won a 500cc can at times. Do not drink the 8.9%! It is rotten.
Emart has been carrying 5,0 Weizen (that's no typo) as of late for 1750 won for a 500cc can. Not bad either.
Final recommendation. Mix Hite Stout and Hite Max for a poor man's Black and Tan.
Gonna go get me another beer!

| Emart also has a beer called "von Raven." Has anybody else tried it? |

Yes....I am absolutely judging partially on hangover severity. I think that this is a completely relevant criteria to use when judging a beer (or any alcoholic beverage).....which is why I think that Thai beer is terrible as well. Thai beer tastes OK, but I find that the hangovers are brutal as well, like you've been poisoned. Korean beer makes me feel like I've been poisoned as well.
When I am in the US I rarely drink regular domestic beer, but I don't think that Bud or Coors has a bad flavor. They're just kind of there....but Korean beer actually tastes skunky and gross, similar to the taste you get in your mouth from drinking Schmidt's from a can.
Of course it's all a matter of opinion, and I really do enjoy a nice, flavorful beer....but a few months ago I was at a bar near the Army base and they had Miller Genuine Draft on tap....and at home I'd never drink that....but it tasted INCREDIBLE, like I was in Belgium or something, it tasted THAT much better than the K beer. I think that our mouths acclimate a tad bit to the K beer out of necessity, but to me it's all just plain awful. |
