Hi there!
I'm starting in Korea in a couple weeks & very excited.
I've heard great things about my school and many ppl have resigned with this program for several years now.
I was wondering, if I like the school and wish to resign would I be getting a raise - & if so, what is the general range for 2nd year positions?
I'm not expecting anything huge, I'm just in the middle of figuring out student loan repayments and creating a budget for getting that under control.
So, to anyone who has resigned after a 1st year, did you get a raise and what was the approximate amount?
I acknowledge that this may differ across schools, but am just looking for an estimate

At the hagwons I worked at a standard raise for the second year was about 100,000/month.

The thing is, many many people don't survive the first year though and only a very tiny few make it through a full 2nd year. Beyond that, even less again.

Most people who have been here more than 3 or 4 years have changed schools multiple times.

If you get through a year and want to renew, the least you deserve is 100,000 won increase.

I have a question similar to this. If you sign for another year with an EPIK school do you still get the one month severance pay? (I know what severance means, but maybe they pay it as a bonus? idk ... noob)

I'm sorry, but in what world do you deserve a raise (implying they continue paying you) if you resign and quit working there?

Both Hagwons and Publish Schools give raises of 100K/mo if you recontract for another year.

The only way you can get a higher raise when you recontract is if you do something to significantly improve your qualifications like earn a a CELTA or TEFL during your first year.

I resigned last year at my public school and got a 100k raise. If I were to re-sign another year, I wouldn't get a raise. I would need my masters for that.

Be careful getting your severance. If you re-sign you shouldn't get it until you leave for good and it's based off of your final salary, not your starting salary. So if your first year you make 2 million and your second year 2.2 mil, you will get 4.4 (2 years x 2.2million) after two years.

If you work one year and are paid your severance you will need to work another complete year to get your next payment. BUT, if you work 1 year and don't collect and then only work 6 more months you will get severance x1.5. You won't get that 0.5 if you collect after the first year.

Typically the employer decides if the severance payout is annual or one lump at the end. If you have the choice & trust your boss, its advantageous to wait.

OP, you've yet to set foot in Korea & you're asking about a 2nd-year raise? Hope things work out.

With EPIK schools, instead of a severance pay, you get the same $$ but as a "re-sign" bonus.

Yes, air76, I think I would like to go to Korea for 2 years as well, ideally. If I like my school I will re-sign the contract for a second year. I think I will because I've talken to several of the teachers there and it's been pretty good reports!
Two years will allow me to experience the country & its culture for a good amount of time, pay off a decent chunk of my loans, travel a bit around Asia on my vacation, and then its off to graduate school!
Also, as someone mentioned (the raise and getting a CELTA/TESOL certificate) I would like to get my TESOL online if it would help in getting a raise/help me to do my job better.
