To all the people who have to both (or even one)... which one is better?
Thailand has expensive airfare, but hotel, food etc.. will be cheaper, so i figure Japan will be a bit more expensive.
In Thailand i want to go to Bangkok, but maybe to one of the beaches one of the days too.
In Japan, i want to see Hiroshima and Kyoto.
Please, tell me which place is better. |

Do you prefer mangoes or oranges?
Both are good and both are very different.

Depends where in Thailand you are. Most of it, yes, it is the monsoon season. On the other hand it really isn't that bad. It rains a bit every day, but usually it is for brief bursts. |

I saw hotel rates in Phuket for the middle of the summer. Decent hotels are less than half price from January.
You can get a decent place to stay for less than $20. Low season rules. |

You basically need to go to both at some point. Just flip a coin to see which you'll go to this time.
Sightseeing Kyoto will suck in summer though. Lots of walking, and I believe it is even hotter than Seoul. |

Agreed, you need to see both!
And YES, Japan in the summer is horrible. WAY more humid than Seoul.
But it's so beautiful. Japan is an amazing place... sorry I just had to say it, I'm so in love with it! |

A month of living like a king travelling around Thailand cost me less than a week of average travel in Japan. And the Land of Smiles is waaaaay more interesting. That said, I have thoroughly enjoyed both countries and think you can't go wrong whatever you choose. |

Which doesn't make sense really. If hotels are in low season, shouldn't airfares folow suit?

Not sure where you guys are but 90km outside of BKK and except for a few late night showers there has been NO appreciable rain here this year.
The monsoon was canceled due to El Nino.

If it is Spring or Fall, go to Japan. March, April, May is blistering hot in Thailand and Sept, Oct are wet to the point of flooding.
If Winter, go to Thailand.
If Summer (June, July, Aug) it is a toss-up as everywhere is equally hot and humid. And Thailand wins the toss-up, go to Thailand. |

If you can, travel to Japan in the Fall. It's a really nice time to visit the parks, temples and enjoy the cooler weather. Japan in the summer is very hot and humid.
If you go to Kyoto in the fall, you can see it during Koyo which it's famous for.
I'd suggest going to the beach in Phuket in August. |
