Hello all,

As you can tell my HP Simplesave 500GB external drive is not being recognized by my laptop. I plug it in through the USD cord and its not showing up on "My computer" or through the "Computer management" functions. I would obviously appreciate any help and would be forever grateful. I hope all is well!

those crappy things need software to run iirc.

It is more of a backup system than an external drive, check the HP website, you should be able to download the software.

Also, it is a USB 2.0 device, make sure you are plugging it into the according USB slot in your laptop.

has this drive ever worked with this laptop in the past? Or is this the first time you've tried to use it? Did you happen to have a sudden powerdown while using it? I once had an external drive that was ruined because it was plugged into my ps3 when it suddenly froze and i had to do a hard reboot. Never could get a computer to recognize it after that. The only other thing i can think of is your usb cable you are using has a short in it. If this is the first time you've tried to use it, it's possible it won't recognize the format it's in. What format is the hdd in? FAT32? NTFS? Little more info please.

The simplest way is to check if it's showing up in the hardware manager

The next would be to run a windows install and see if it shows up as one of the disks, it might need to be mounted or partitioned.

Man, that is exactly what happened to me lol I was using it when my computer froze and I did a reboot, and afterwards my computer stopped recognizing the external drive. I brought it in to a capable IT guy in suwon, so we will see what he says. Any other suggestions? Thanks for the message!, tom

Try this it did clear up some of my USB troubles I was having. Unplug you computer, if laptop remove battery for a few minutes. Then restart your computer. I think some sort of static charge builds up and make USB malfunction for a while.
