|
|
So I have been here a few weeks, and a Korean friend of mine has decided to play matchmaker and set me up with one of the girls he is friends with. He says she is smart and funny, but the problem is she doesn't speak much English.
The plan is that I'm going to meet her tomorrow night (with him present to translate and make us feel more comfortable). It's all a bit strange... I don't know anything about how dating works over here, but he seems sure we'll hit it off despite not speaking the same language.
just looking for some tips from you learned annd experienced types who have been through anything like this! am i expected to say anything in particular? is there anything i should avoid saying/doing?
Appreciate any help |

Been there, done that. It'll be really awkward and you may or may not meet her again. She won't say much and will expect you to do all the work. On the bright side, she gets a free meal/whatever out of it... |

Honestly it sounds like your "friend" is using you as a type of bait to spend time with the woman himself. By having you there...it will create an uncomfortable situation by which he is the only one able to communicate with her..thereby making him the center of her attention.
It cant hurt to go and enjoy the experience, but seriously if she can't speak English and you cant speak Korean...why would he suggest the meeting to begin with? Enjoy the good evening and watch them leave together in a taxi when its over.. |

Not to be overly negative, and I'm sure ppl below me will tell you some extravagant stories of factual events.. but...

The fact that you'll need a translator to communicate is all sorts of retarded. Not ragging on you for the lack of Korean knowledge, but the whole situation is silly. Do it for the experience I guess, but it will get annoying fast. |

That's kinda like reverse cock-blocking, but more cynical... |

I've done it and it's fun for a minute but as soon as I realize that I have to do all the conversation work it starts getting real tough. I would try it just for the experience but you probably won't want to do it again, unless she's smoking hot then you might put up with for a little while longer. |

Sounds like the OP needs a pinch hitter.
I'll do the blind date for you. Your friend need not even be there, since I speak Korean. |

Good grief. Just tell your friend to take a hike. Get shitcanned drunk with her and you are guaranteed a happy ending. It isn't that difficult. |

Yeah, this sounds a little weird. If he needs to be present on the first date, wouldn't he need to be there on any subsequent dates too? If you are going to go, I would just meet her alone regardless. |

Hehehehe...
Just get drunk. I went on a date with a Korean guy once and his English sucked. My Korean was limited to stuff about food/weather/buying things so I was sucky too. But we went to the beach and drank ourselves silly...ended up being one of the most hilarious nights of my life. His English suddenly seemed 10 times better. The power of booze |

I can almost guarantee that this is what will happen. No Korean man tries to set a foreigner up with a Korean girl. It doesn't happen. |
