Does anyone know if I can obtain a criminal background check from within Korea?
I'm in Korea already for a summer camp, but plan on travelling out of the country after it ends. I brought sealed transcripts with me and my original degree so I could find a job teaching in Korea after I travel this summer. The only thing I didn't bring was a background check. I didn't think a simple police check worked, and I didn't have time to get the FBI check before I left. I was also under the impression that the check was only valid for something like 30 or 60 days from issue. So basically I want to know if I can get a background check from anywhere in Korea. Spare me the rules on E2's needing to get their first visa from their home country, I already know and I'm taking the chance and trying from Korea.
Thanks for the help... |

Where are you from?
For Americans, it depends on the state. My state (Nebraska) allows you to phone it in. They'll even send it over to the Capitol building for the apostille, and then the SOS office will mail it to you, no problem. But I have no idea for other states. Call your state police/patrol/department of criminal investigation, whoever does the checks and tell them you need a check done and need it notarized and apostilled, see what they say. Might have to have a parent or friend go get it for you, or might have to go in person. |

| The bigger matter would be the interview at a consulate in your home country if this is for a first time E2. |

I'm from Washington, I'll see if I can get my mom to call around and see if they will take care of it like that. How would I get the check sent to me in Korea though, I don't have an address obviously...
I know all about the interview at the consulate in your home country, however I know of people in the last year that have managed to get their E2 without the interview. In fact one recruiter even said that that is no longer required with the new regulations (but really who knows in this country!).
I have a flight home the end of October if I can't find work anyway, I would just prefer to not have to use it and the background check is really the only thing I'm worried about. |
