| I know the E1 (professor) visa doesn't require a criminal background check or a medical exam/HIV/TB test, but have any of you with an E1 visa been required submit to these tests (by the university) anyway? If so, were all faculty members required to do so, or were only foreigners required to do so? Also, were students and staff members (janitors, security guards, etc.) also required to undergo the tests? |

...so you sincerely think that everyone on the university grounds might have been screened for HIV/TB? Or are you just fishing for something to fuel your indignation at being tested for diseases as a foreigner?
Get over it -- your home country most likely screens immigrants for diseases as well.... |

I got screened by the Australian Government for a work holiday visa.
Also where have you been the last few years. It started with the E-2. Other officials and korean busy bodies are also trying to get all other visa included like F-4, F2s yada yada.
ALso many school and businesses will also ask you to do said tests for their own edification. I think some Uni teahers do not need criminal checks but Universities will still ask for them.

valid point. many countries such as australia require that you submit a hiv test for working in their country.
the difference is that in korea their justification is that you are working with children or a large percentage of koreans - university students etc.
the hypocracy is that korean professors travel overseas so they my get infected with whatever desease and they are not screened like those on an e2 visa. yes, public schools get tested, but not for drugs or hiv but just a physical. but they are working with children or large number of adults so the whole thing is that if Koreans really cared about the safety of children, everyone should get tested. |

Exactly! I don't mind getting tested (or submitting a criminal background check for that matter). But the law here doesn't require either of these for E1 visa holders.
Why does the employer (university) require only foreign instructors to get tested? This kind of logic implies that only foreigners (and not Koreans) get contagious diseases. And, of course, this thinking/treatment unfairly stigmatizes all foreigners teaching at the university.
I say test everyone, Korean and foreign alike - faculty, students and staff. And require criminal background checks of everyone - I don't want to be working with any criminals (faculty, students or staff), regardless of their nationality! What's good for the goose is good for the gander, right? |
