About two years ago I started getting more into geek culture and that extended into an interest in comics and graphic novels. I started with The Watchmen (wanted to read it before the film was released!) and moved on from there. I've covered much of the Alan Moore spectrum (Watchmen and The Killing Joke were my 2 faves).
I've become a devotee of The Walking Dead which is, I guess, a horror comic. Though as most agree, it's so much more than just zombie fiction.
Other ones I recommend are:
Scott Pilgrim: Cute indie romance meets videogames/comic action fun. First book is so-so, but my enjoyment increased at an exponential rate. The ending was predictable, but satisfying.
Essex County: Wow. This is a sort of depressing look at fictional lives in a non-fictional rural county in Canada. The art is spectacular with a lot of well placed white space. On second thought, not depressing, but melancholy to be sure.
Kick-Ass: I saw and really enjoyed the film before I read the book. I think the book is SOO much better. though. It's darker and less Hollywood cheese. This is about an ordinary nerdy HS kid who decides to become a superhero if you have been living under a rock, btw.

Finally, I've just started reading Chew and it is FAN-FRICKEN-TASTIC! The lead character, Chu, has the ability to acquire information psychically when he chews on things. It's appropriately grotesque but Chu is sympathetic enough to make it work.
I'm also reading Invincible but I don't think I am involved enough to make a judgment.

I haven't read much traditional superhero stuff, but I think I'd like to. Any recommendations for this genre? Where to begin? I mean, I do mean to check out Marvel Zombies, but what about err more continuing series.

I suppose you can post manga recommendations, but I am mostly over the manga I read in my youth. I don't know if there is any manga that fits my current interests.

Let's geek out!

The Killing Joke, tut, tut, tut. If you're going to bring Batman in to it, it's all about the Frank Miller stuff. The Dark Knight Returns and Batman: Year One, imo, are the greatest things in graphic fiction. Awesome, awesome stuff.

As for Alan Moore, the Promethea stuff knocks my socks off. It's fan-bloody-tastic.

I really enjoyed Y- The Last Man. A plague wipes out all male mammals except for one man and his monkey.

Marvel Zombies is a fun limited series, but you'd probably enjoy it more if you've followed regular Marvel Comics a bit. The most recent incarnation involving Machine Man and Howard the Duck traveling through multiple dimensions tracking down zombies gets a bit silly, but definitely has its moments.

A few things I've enjoyed:

Brian Michael Bendis's work, like Jinx, Goldfish, Powers, Fortune and Glory, and especially Torso.

The X-Force stuff from issue 116-129 I thought was great. I think that section was collected in a couple of graphic novels. Really fun satire.

The Sandman is essential.

Jeff Smith's Bone, which you can now get in one enormous volume.

I also like Cerebus. I'm only about halfway through the series.

Most of this stuff is fairly old now. I haven't kept up much, but this is some of what I remember really liking. I look forward to the suggestions of others.

The Dark Knight Returns is fantastic, definitely worth a read.
Year One is good too, but other than those I'd steer clear of Frank Miller's Batman stuff...the guy is absolutely off his nut Laughing

I'd recommend We3 to everyone. If you ever saw that movie 'The Incredible Journey' (AKA: Homeward Bound) as a kid - think of that, except with an 18 Rating. Exceptionally violent, very touching and beautifully drawn. Can't recommend this one enough.

If you fancy something a bit different or have even a passing interest in the works of H.P. Lovecraft I'd recommend Necronauts. Harry Houdini, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (author of Sherlock Holmes stories) and Edgar Allen Poe combat Lovecraftian horrors. It's a little brief, but the artwork is great and the concept is too much fun to pass up for my money.

V For Vendetta is another obvious one given the (fairly poor) movie based on it. Don't be put off by that though, the graphic novel is infinitely better.

And you can't go wrong with a bit of Judge Dredd of course.

Anything Alan Moore: From Hell, Watchmen, etc.
Frank Miller's Dark Knight and the Dark Knight Strikes a Again are brilliant.
Totally lusting after the last Scott Pilgrim also. Lost at Sea, which also by Bryan Lee O'Malley is also enjoyable. If you after getting some of the Japanese variety, many online groups scan and translate chapters of stuff from a wide variety of genres. Try sorting though mangaupdates.com and giving some a go.

Miller peeked in the 80s with DKR and his Daredevil work... give a man a Rolling Stone interview and it's straight down the tubes from then on out. his promised 'Batman vs. Bin laden' comic languishes in publishing purgatory for it's 8th year now.

His Year One helped to recreate the DC lineup along with John Byrne's 'Man of Steel' run on Superman. too bad it all ran out of control again in the new millenium... Crying or Very sad

We3, yes!

I borrowed that back at home from my sister's fiance. I never did read it though. I know it will depress me like no other. I'll definitely be sure to check it out in spite of how sad it will inevitably be.

Speaking of graphic novels, are there any good places for picking up English language versions in Seoul? The usual haunts (What the Book, Kyobo, etc.) aren't very good.

Yes, where do you buy this sort of thing? Even Korean ones would be fine. I'm trying to buy some gifts for people back home. Movie posters are especially coveted.

The best thing I've read in years has been Fables from Vertigo.
The whole series is pretty good, with a few issues and story lines that have been fantastic.
Especially the "1001 Nights of Snowfall" novel and "The Last Castle" special.
It's won the Eisner award just about every year for the last half decade or something.
