I've been looking for teachers' insider points of view on universities in Daegu.
I've had some very revealing answers about Yeungnam and Kyungbook. I'm just wondering if anyone has any more to say about these and also about keimyung and others.
I also had an offer from Daegu polytechnic college which seems to have good vacation/hours but poor salary (20m per year). Any further info would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks so far to jinks, drunkenmaster & crescent. |

| Is your wife's family there? If not, why the hell would you want to be? |

Wasn't it Daegu Catholic that had some insane coordinator who told one of the staff members that his very pregnant wife was no longer welcome on campus because the very sight of her pregnancy offended the students?
The same place where one teacher walked out in the middle of the semester ... and where they offered 7am non-credit classes and late evening ones too so that students could learn English "from morning to night" |

Don't take any position offered by Yeungjin College. I have previously posted about how the male office manager of its Foreign Langiage Institute treated me in an interview, and his harassment of me and my husband after we took positions elsewhere. This school has numerous issues going way back as well (abusing Western staff, paying late) and have caused several teachers to do midnight runs.
Be warned. |

Wow - I wrote the original post a long time ago. At that time I knew nothing but now I know a lot more. Worked in a few of these and heard countless testimonies from those who work/worked in them so I think the consensus on the most desirable universities in Daegu would look like this, (in terms of how teachers are treated and how this is reflected in the various terms and conditions):
1. Daegu National University of Education
by a mile then...
2. Keimyung University
3. Daegu Haany University
4. Daegu University of Foreign Studies
5. Kyungil University
6. Daegu University
7. Daegu Catholic University
8. Daegu Polytechnic College
9. Kyungpook National University
10. Yeungnam University
11. Yeungjin College
Has anyone worked in these below? Maybe they don't employ English instructors...
Daegu Arts University, Daegu Cyber University, Daegu Health College, Daegu Mirae College, Daegu Technical College, , Kyongbuk College of Science, Kyongbuk University of Foreign Studies, Taekyeung College, Taeshin Christian University, and Youngnam Theological College and Seminary. |

haha......the person who he is talking about is me and my formerly pregnant wife........the woman was insane, but the uni hated her and she got ousted because students hated her.....
whats funny is this situation happened with me and another foreign teacher (who left the next semester and went to korea univ) who had a pregnant wife.....happened with two different female korean coordinators in the same department. What was good about the situation is that the "big boss" was a woman who was SUPER COOL! Luckily the big boss would put the retarded, unmarried, 35+ years old korean women in their place.
but all in all Catholic was not a bad job at all, especially if its your first uni job.......

yeungjin...terrible
Kyungpook....they work you to death (from what I heard) and make you "sit" a lot....work 9-5
Daegu catholic - worked there and had ups and downs...but it was a great starter job and I made a lot of good korean friends there (admin). But the camps are mandatory depending on what department you are in. Its a rich school that does no like to spend money....but all in all, like I said, its a great starter school. Also, the pay I recieved was 2.5....not too bad
Daegu Uni - did a presentation there teaching korean english teachers new and creative ideas on how to teach english....got paid really well!
Hanny - great job with low hours and no surprises (from what I heard)
Kyungil - know some current and former teachers that loved it....low hours and a day off in the middle of the week. Optional overtime and camps i think.....but the pay was a tad low.....
Daegu Poly - It has low hours, which is great. Its a little disorganized a times, but so are many other unis. I worked there only because they needed an extra teacher for a special class. But its in the boonies and if you dont care about being a little ways away from things, its should not be too bad of a job.
Cyber unis - in general, beware of cyber unis....I dont know specifically about the daegu uni, but cyber unis change things more often than you would like. Because its a cyber uni, class times can be quite speratic and might mold around when students are available.
My current uni - the best benefits I have ever seen in a uni...12 hours, one day off a week...no camps...no surprises......just do your job well and you can keep it as long as students like you.....Also, foreigners are given quite a bit of control over things, which is something that many korean universities absolutely will not do.... |

Big Texas or any other uni teacher,
Does your university have any openings? I know it is late to be looking for
fall, but this just came up. I have a good resume and teach at a university in Texas. I have an MA in TESOL and grade iBT for ETS and IELTS. PM me with your email address if you know of anything.
Thanks from Austin,
Anthony |
