My contract ends this week, and I am supposed to be flying out on the 20th-- 7 days away. However, my boss (and the recruiting agency) haven't booked my flight yet. I had offered to be flexible with my end date until my replacement teacher could start, which turned out to be a big mistake-- they've changed my end date half a dozen times over the past three weeks.

I'm growing worried that they're going to continue putting off buying my flight, and then come to me and demand I take the flight pay instead (which is 700,000W max according to my contract), sticking me w/paying over $1000 out of pocket. Are they allowed to do so, and is this something that hagwon owners are known to do?

We, unanimously agree that you will be given 700,000W on your last day of work. (especially if this is what the contract allows.) Nothing more to say here.

;;;and that you might be given 2 days notice of when your last day of work will be.

Wednesday, 7:45 p.m. "The director said your replacement teacher will be here Saturday morning. The director won't be back until Friday evening. Then he/she will go by your apartment and make sure it is the way it was when you arrived. So make sure to clean your apartment. You can bring your things to school with you Friday if you don't have a place to put them. He/she, you, and I will meet in the office after work and finalize everything. You sure have been a great teacher. We will miss you."

Buy the cheapest ticket you can find and expect nothing more than your contract requires (700k won).

Labor WON'T help you with anything beyond that number.

To clarify, my contract does not state that my ONLY option is a flight allowance. I'm at a hagwon, and my contract states that the academy will purchase the flight for me or pay me a 700,000 flight allowance "upon employee's choice." I chose to have the academy purchase my flight for me.

What I'm concerned about is the academy and recruiter trying to force me to take the flight allowance now since they seem to be "struggling" to find me a flight, although I suspect the real hold up is they are having difficulties finding a flight for less than $1500 at this point.

If it's in my contract that they will purchase the flight unless I choose otherwise, can they try to make me take the allowance instead?

Knowledge is power. Thanks for providing additional information/clarification. IF I were you, I would insist upon the ticket. Especially if you are indeed going home.

However, there is little you can do to force it to happen.

I suspect the 700,000 W allowance is beneficial to someone who is not actually going home, but travelling to another Asian country or staying here.

In my experience(many, many), one contract said flight allowance, without specifying $ amounts(big mistake) so I had to negotiate, a reasonable amount with my boss. ( I ended up only $100 in the hole.)

Another contract said, the lowest fare listed in the last 30 days will be given as a budget. I took the cash and used it to purchase an even cheaper flight.
pocketed $300)

Many contracts state 1.3 or 1.5 million won flight allowance will be reimbursed upon receipt of purchase.( usually public schools)

Go into work tomorrow and insist upon your flight ticket.

OH, by the way, please don't think the recruiter gives a rat's behind, he/she is working for the school, NOT YOU. So ,please ignore ANY advice flowing from that direction.

Many contracts state 1.3 or 1.5 million won flight allowance will be reimbursed upon receipt of purchase.( usually public schools)This was always my best deal. I would book my flight and they would give me my money back almost instantly. (sweet) But now, some schools wait until after you have returned home, and will deposit the money 10 days later.(This I hate; but this method is to confirm that you actually went home and is not wandering the streets of Korea.

Go into work tomorrow and insist upon your flight ticket.

NOTE TO INCOMING TEACHERS: Please look at this section of your contract carefully and plan ahead. If you are coming with the intention of staying, renewing, traveling, or going back home: the FLIGHT SECTION of the contract can work for you or against you! "Forewarned is forearmed!"
