What to do in Fukuoka?

After flirting with the idea of doing Thailand or the Phillippines over Chuseok, I decided to stay realistic (and within budget) and book a round-trip hydrofoil ferry ticket to Fukuoka.

What's to do there? I know there's a nearby temple, an underground city, a lot of museums, and shrines galore - but is there anything y'all specifically loved when you visited there?

And are there any worthwhile day trips to another Japanese city with Fukuoka as a home base?

Thanks in advance!

Go on Asia's largest Ferris wheel, visit the electronics market area and (ideally by bicycle) find the narrow walkways and nightlife area of Canal City. Enjoy! It's pretty scenic.

Take the bullet train and you can do a daytrip to Hiroshima and check out the atomic bomb site and Miyajima island.

Take buses or trains to Nagasaki for the atomic bomb site and Chinatown. There's also Kumamoto with one of the big three castles in Japan.

If you want something more relaxing there are bus tours to Kurokawa hot springs. Great mountain scenery and traditional riverside hot spring baths. It may not be your thing to do in summer tho.

There are a couple of great parks in the western part of the city. The Fukuoka castle ruins make a nice walk. Close by there is also a killer Shinto shrine with real priests that perform a ritual every hour with drums and waving of stuff. Oyafuku-dori and the surrounding area has some good night life as well as some good shopping in and around the Tenjin subway station. Also try to catch a baseball game at the Yahoo Dome. Softbank Hawks are reasonably supported and you can get some reasonably good away support there as well depending on who they are playing. Good day trips around Kyushu to a bunch of different hot spring towns are also a good time.

Fukuoka is pretty fun. I enjoyed it a lot more than Osaka when I went.
Ohori park is quite nice.
The temples are very scenic.
There is a folk museum that was pretty interesting if you like that kind of stuff.
Canal city was also nice. There is a decent buffet on the 1st floor
Have some pork ramen
Tenjin is a really big nice shopping area, lots of stuff around it and attached to it.

there is a historical city nearby, Dazaifu

which I'm hoping to see next time I'm there.

Hakata Station (The big one in Fukuoka) is where you can take the Shinkasen to Hiroshima. Plenty of trains, 4,940 is your cost. Takes just over an hour to get there. http://www.hyperdia.com Got the info from there.

I found myself there twice for visa runs.

The first time I pre-booked a hotel for the weekend ( arrived there Friday morning ) but got my visa that Friday afternoon.

Would have cost me airline fees and would have lost the two days hotel booking so I stayed the weekend with visa in hand.

Then....I came back again a few years later and it took until the 3rd day, had to pay yet another day at the nice hotel where I was staying on the sea ( which I booked at the airport , one day , reasonable price)

To make matters worse , I only got out of there by upgrading to business class or I could have been there for a week.

First time - - downtown sex district fun place no money to spend

Second time -- - next to the sea a lot of time to kill but again no money.

I felt like my money went three times as fast as it did in Korea.

Mt. Aso is really cool but it's not real easy to do by public transport.

Beppu is cool if you like hot springs.

Nagasaki is worth a visit and has an impressive Atomic Bomb Museum.
