And were you able to get out of paying ETF? I have ATT with a year left on my contract and was wondering if moving abroad qualifies as an exemption to paying the fee. |

I was able to get out of other contracts by showing a contract and a one-way ticket. They asked for a bill from my new residence. I explained it would not be in English and would likely not be in my name. Everything was resolved before I sent them the bill. Good luck! |

Maybe you could transfer it to a friend in need of a 1 year contract. You may have to pay a minimal transfer fee, of course. You could give them the phone for free in exchange for their paying the transfer fee. |

I just paid my stupid bill for a year but my sister was on the same plan.
When I get back I found out if you show proof of living somewhere where the service doesnt work - bam, automatically out of the contract. Youll just need a fax your contract. |

You could try suspending your account for the remainder of the contract. I had ATT as well with maybe 5 or 6 months left and they let me do this. I just had to pay $10 a month and when my contract was up I just emailed them telling them I didn't want to renew. Worked out just fine for me. Hope this helps. |

Verizon gave me an exemption on paying the ETF. They said if I was moving out of country, I could get the exemption (they also said it had to be a country they don't cover, as I guess they have a presence in some other countries, but SK isn't one). I think i sent them a copy of my (unsigned) contract before I left. They seemed to just want something. Pretty good if you ask me. |

Most cellphone companies allow you to break the contract w/out paying a fee if you can prove you are moving abroad. I know I could with t-mobile and sprint. |
