K, this is not a hack on Korea, but rather all us foriegn folks out here...

What is it about this place that causes such mind numbing behave? Considering that as a profession (if you want to call it one) all ESL teachers should have a Bachelors degree in something, why the hell do we still seem to have a freshman uni culture? Far too many of these posts seem to derive in how many Korean chicks one guy has scammed, or how smashed they got on the weekend. Not only act like it, but consider it bragging rights?! Dude, I quit bragging about that crap years ago. Get over it and grow the F up.

Yo, I am not an overly mature guy by any means. I am a partier from way back. Love my bars on the weekend, and the party mid-week. But what is it about this place that seems to drive people to act like such asses 24/7?Sh*t man, this is not a vacation, this is a job! Conduct yourself accordingly and quit pissing outside my hallways at 5am on a Monday. I really dont care that you dont take your job seriously. At least take yourself so...Don't use this as a stepping-stone to adulthood sonnie.

An officer buddy of mine here once told me that he understood why American GIs got such a bad rap. He said "In the army, typical private is a guy who didnt do that well in school, and didnt have the much going for him back home. You take that guy, put him together with another couple hundred guys like him, send him out to drink, and its no wonder they give their country a bad wrap" Hey, we all should have done well enough in school to graduate university, and we had enough going for us back home to allow us to do that...What the hell is our excuse?! Shocked

K, apologies out there to the 85% of the ESL pop that this does not apply to. Just seems to me that far too often, for a group of such educated people , we act down right childlish.

Word

End of B*tch Session

nah, I'm not afraid. Bring it on!

Not saying that this applies to everyone (hence the tactful apology to the 80% Smile ) but I just find that the actions of the morons are far more visible than those of the rest of us. No prob with drinking, its the attitude that pisses me off.

Sorry, just spent a weekend with some guys that made me feel very grownup...and I am an immature mofo! Maybe its undo bias...

Number one on my hit list is guys that come out here and act like players, cuz they dont see much action back home. Lets go Twisted Evil

I think a certain percentage of the population anywhere are A-holes, and when these guys get somewhere foreign, they think it's showtime.

They would be better off back home.

I imagine they are closet racists, whether they think so or not. To them Koreans are just yellow people that talk funny, and they feel that in no way should the opinion of a Korean matter to them.

One ass that I met before thought is was okay to scream f*ck on the streets, that Korean women had hot bods but "gook" faces, etc. etc. ad nauseam. What a pr*ck.

Calm down guy- its just a message board. (tm)

But hey- I agree- (some) englishee teachers here act terribly! Perhaps it's due to the line of work they are in?

For the lot of you that are too sensitive- that last part was a JOKE!

You should have asked him what a gook face was! Define a "gook" face? Thats rubbish- what a boob.

I am curious- did you school him or just laugh at him?

Neither. I don't laugh at racism or stupidity, nor do I lecture people I don't know that well.

I didn't seek his company anymore. Some people don't need attention, whether positive or negative, it only encourages them.

CanadaCommando,

I know the people of which you speak. I've known them for a long time. The more years I live here, the more of them I meet. Maybe that's because the longer I live here, the more foreigners there are. Law of averages.

It's not Korea that changes these people into slobbering imbeciles. They already were slobbering imbeciles. It's the fact they've left their nest at home, away from the scrutiny of Mom/Dad/friends, and now feel as though they have a fresh start, an anonymous new beginning, that gives them license to act like uncaged animals.

It could be Seoul or Timbuktu. There are people like the ones you describe everywhere.

K, true enough. I know being a ESL teacher shouldn't be considered as being a member of a cultured society, and this message board isn't like a council or such but...

Last month, while walking down in Hyewa I saw some foriegner approach some middleschool Korean girls, grab his crotch as if in pain, and proudly exclaim that he had just had *beep* surgery in Korean. I know he was an ESL teacher because I knew someone who was with him, and they were embarrased just to be there with him. Embarassed

ANY group of people would be ashamed to have that sort of person as a member (ie. ESL worker). If I some foriegn (or any) guy did that in my home town, I'd wanna kick his ass. And he is a percieved member of our "group". Shocked

K, now to work on that whole calming down thing....

I think as a consolation the board is not really representative of the esl community in Korea. There are probably more ignoramuses out there then here.Relatively speaking, this board is a more evolved group of primates *cough cough.

for what it's worth i think korea has a far higher % of the kind of person you're talknig about than other countries where ESLers are. predominantly because thre are no other countries in the world that will take on a guy w/no expereince, pay for his ticket, hook him up with a free pad and give him a lotta disposable cash in a place that loves drinknig and will give him some play.

really, it doesn't take a hell of a lot to get a B.A i have one and i also have a masters, but the B.A wasn't rocket science.

most other countries, in asia particulalry, don't have anywhere near the perks korea does. japan you need huge start up cash. taiwan won't pay your fare or give an apt for most every contract. china the pay is naff. thailand gives you stuff all as part of your contract.

korea gives you the works for nothing. who wouldn't come here?

I'm a confirmed 3 year old... but I definitely took offense when one of the foreigners in a group I was with started making rude comments to Korean women under the justification that they wouldn't understand. That pissed me off something fierce.

Generally, I think I act significantly worse on this board than in person. And that's something I'm gonna try and work on: not being a pr*ck on this board. Last thing y'all need is to read my BS.

I think the lack of political correctness in Korea and the perceived sense of victimizatioon that a lot westerners carry with us account for this unrestrained expression of id impulses. First example: I ogle women shamelessly here because there's no real prohibition against it and (not to justify myself at all!) because I don't think they are offended by it. Second, I sometimes get furious about stuff that adds up to a hill of beans if viewed objectively. But at the moment, I'm convinced that I am certainly being persecuted and this mustn't be allowed to stand.

Just one of the many reasons I love Korea is that here, I'm free to grow up at my own pace.

Can't you ogle women back home on your planet or is it prohibited? What planet are you from?Tell me what planet besides Korea let's men ogle women?

How would you know that they aren't offended by it?Korean women are quite coy.Infact, in my humble opinion they probably rank high up as one of the most stuck-up race of women.

My girlfriend tells me that Korean women think lowly of a man who ogles women.Maybe she just said that to keep my eyes focused on her rather. Smile
