I read a lot about using recruiters or simply going in person to find a job, but not much about the Korean job board here on Dave's. I always see a lot of jobs posted on here so is this like a another way to find a job, but not talked about so much on these forums? Or are those jobs on the job board posted by the recruiters that are usually used anyway? Or do people avoid these jobs on Dave's because there are many scams?

This has probably been asked before but I did not see it in my search. What is the best way to find a job in Korea? Go to the source, like apply directly to SMOE or a hagwon (if possible) or use recruiter? I am talking about a first timer applying from outside Korea. If these questions have been answered, feel free to provide the link as I didn't find it. Thanks. I am hoping to be in Korea sometime in summer 2011.

It can be a crapshoot, some recruiters on it will respond, some won't. but it seems to be the best way see what new jobs have appeared.

The job board is a starting point. I agree with JD_T that there is a crap-shoot factor.

Many of the jobs on the job board include a website link where you can fill in an on-line application and it can take as little as a resume and a recent snapshot to get the ball rolling. Other jobs on the job board do not have a website but provide an email address for initial contact.

I made many contacts and filled out many on-line applications using information on Dave's job boards. After the first 3-5, it was becoming a virtual routine and in a matter of days I had initiated over a dozen contacts.

That was in January and I actually had interviews and then an offer by mid-February, but was not ready to commit. Besides, I needed to fine-tune my documents, and kept getting temp jobs diverting my attention from thoughts of working in Korea. Meanwhile, I kind of got a feel for which recruiters seemed more or less responsive to my particular situation (I am middle-aged).

By April, I was closer to committing and getting my documents collected. By then I was working with a persistent but patient and helpful recruiter and things went well, overall. I've been in Korea since early June, working in a public school. And it all started in January with the job board on Dave's.

Seems easy enough. By looking at the job board it seems like jobs are in abundance in Korea, even though I have read, every now and then, that the EFL job market is saturated. At least on the job board if appears not.

Look closely though and you will see that the postings are made up of repeat posts from the same 5 recruiters, each featuring only about 10 or less jobs, many of which are entry-level hogwon gigs wanting 20 yr old american females. 5 months to find a job in Korea?? Insane.

Compare this to e.g. 3 years back when you had hundreds of new jobs advertised every day.. and getting hired in a job of your choice didn't take longer than a day. You used to be able to post your resume in the evening, and find 150 job offers in your email the next day.

I've never seen it this bad. Ever. The Korean bubble has burst.

There are so many jobs posted all over the web. It really is dispersed, mostly because schools either try to save money or just don't place ads in one place or place ads in multiple places.

I think the best strategy is finding out from others (like here on these discussion boards) where you want to work, more or less. Or finding out the recruiters that are quite successful. If I was looking for a job, I'd network like hell, including social networking sites and LinkedIn. Even just messaging people on Dave's for good tips about their own jobs is really helpful.

Go HERE and change the search term to what you want. Hundreds of jobs daily from all over.....

Amen!

I remember when recruiter posts were nearly non-existent. It seems thought that in the last 5 or so years, mosts have become lazy and just want to get a recruiter to find them a teachers. I think that there are still a LOT of ELT jobs here. The problem is just that most hogwans are going through recruiters now. Most don't realize that they are being cheated.

OP, if it's your first job, you'll most likely have to go through a recruiter. But, if you stick around for a second year, you can find a lot of jobs while you're here.
