Speaking for myself:

▶ a book to read in my spare time
▶ an annual 다이어리, whatever it's called in English
▶ glasses
▶ sunglasses
▶ an electronic dictionary
▶ a pencil case

I guess that these "bookbag" carriers are not at cool as you are. That explains it adequately. At least... thats the answer that you wanted to hear right?

1. They teach privates and their bags are full of supplies.
2. They are from outside Seoul and have come for the weekend.

Outside of Seoul? That explains all of the Canadian flags on those backpacks.

I've thought about why I feel the NEED for a backpack while wandering about Korea. In the U.S., I'm always nearby my car. I could always walk back to it and drop stuff off or pick things up.

In Korea, I maybe out for several hours at a time. A backpack is useful for carrying purchases. I usually have a thermos of cold water as I do not trust whatever is given in restaurants. These days, I also like to travel with one of my ipads or macbook airs as I like to sometimes take random notes.

This question has come up a time or two here. Back back bags are practical in walking situations where you don't have a car to lug around your water, lunch, and anything else you don't want in your pockets. I also would consider Korea to be very casual, like anywhere else, most don't wear business attire. We all had this idea that your career after college would entail wearing something different, but only a few business types do that. If you've stepped up from hoodies and jeans to wearing slacks and button down shirts, then you are professional dressed up enough. I'm not carrying a briefcase in this situation.

I bring my netbook & my Korean textbook + notebook when I go out on weekends, as I often.. y'know.. study? Those of us with friends/boyfriends/girlfriends also enjoy wearing different clothes after we sleep over somewhere. Pretty revolutionary ideas, really.

Because people have this primal fear of not having certain things.

It's related to some deep dark secret in the human psyche. The fear of want amid plenty. (apologies to DS9 fans).

I think bags are fine, its just most people are carrying these nylon monstrosities replete with gigantic bottle of water. To work 5 minutes away.

Carry a bag, but have a sense of style.

I carry around all of my important dossiers, some charts and graphs, a couple Armani suits, and a bottle of champagne... because you never know when an important client is going to call up and ask for a sitdown.

I'm playing with the big boys now, and I've only got one shot at this... erego my fluorescent orange backpack is the only way I can be sure that nothing ever takes me by surprise. It's a real lifesaver in the high stakes world of ESL teaching in Korea... and I attribute 90% of my success directly to it.
