work at a Hagwon and recieve _________ vacation days

OR

Work at a public school and receive __________ vacation months

Am I right? Wrong?

Also, are you forced to accept the apartment that your school provides for you? If you don't, are you able to pocket that money for yourself?

Thanks for any input

Its number of vacation 'days' for both, but you normally receive a few more at a public school.

At a hagwon you have to negotiate whether they give you an apartment or an apartment subsidy. At a public school, you normally have the choice prior to signing the contract, but once decided, you can't change your mind (and they cant either).

Vacation:

Typically 10 working days at the school's convenience when working in a hagwan.

Typically 15-21 working days split and taken during the schools summer and winter breaks if you are working at a public school.
+In addition you have the option to bank your overtime instead of taking cash (8 classes = 1 day).
+In addition, if you are at a rural designated school you get 5 more working days for paid annual leave.
+In addition you get 2 more calendar weeks of paid leave if you re-sign at the same school for a 2nd or subsequent year of employment.

Depending on your circumstances you can get up to 6-8 weeks of (contracted) paid vacation when working at a public school.

Can you explain this better? Does this give me the option to make more money, or no?

If you work overtime classes and take the cash, then yes, you make more money. TTompatz is saying that you can increases the number of vacation days by banking extra classes, foregoing the OT pay, and converting them to extra vacation time - 8 OT classes = +1 vacation day -- which is kind of BS, if you only teach 22 hours per week regularly, you should only need 4-5 classes to count as a day. Since you have to take your vacation days during the school vacation period anyway, you likely wouldnt be teaching at all (deskwarming, assuming camps are finished) and youre trading teaching 8 classes for the privilege of not sitting at school and surfing the internet. Personally, I'd take the cash for those 8 classes and prevent my desk from getting cold.

BTW there is no guarantee of getting any overtime classes. You might, you might not - so dont count on the extra money.
