|
|
I have a question about a class I teach in my hagwon....I'm pretty sure there's not much I can do about it but just wanted to get some opinions and see if there is anything I can do.
I teach in a small elementary/middle school hagwon, and a couple of months ago my boss wanted me to start teaching a high school student one on one, just conversation. I am her only teacher, none of the Korean teachers teach her and she just comes once I week. I prepare the classes myself, with no book/input from my boss. I recently found out that she has been paying 200,000won for just four of the lessons, which my boss has been pocketing. The normal charge for our hagwon is 190,000 a month, which includes 6 hours of teaching a week... so my boss has obviously made quite a good deal.
I'm leaving soon anyway, so I'm trying not to let it bother me but recently she has really been putting pressure on me for completely ridiculous things so I was just wondering if there was anyway I could call her out. It bugs me especially as the student decided to come to our hagwon because she heard I was a good teacher, and I just hate thinking of my boss getting that money.
Any opinions/suggestions would be great!
Thanks |

Can't see what the problem is here. If the student is getting one to one tuition, it's going to cost more than normal classes. Most hagwans will have a different price scale for one to one tuition. If you are not doing more than your contracted hours, your boss is of course entitled to keep all the money. Am I missing something? |

This is exactly what I was thinking. |

Is your boss the owner of the hogwan? If so, she's losing out by having the one-on-one student. Do the math and you'll see that a class of 4 students is making her more money than the one-on-one class.
Many schools will ask you to make up material. If it's a conversation class then just have a conversation. If it's something specific, then photocopy stuff from books.
From what you've said, it doesn't sounds like anything out of the ordinary for ELT (in any country). It doesn't even sound like something dodgy. It sounds like a very typical and normal ELT job. |

Sounds like the common, single-student rate...and saying the owner of the school "pockets" the money is misleading -- your boss collects tuition...you know, the money needed to run the school?
Are you for real, or are you just trolling? Of course, if you are real, you would say you are real, and if you are just trolling, then you would say you are real...so either way, I guess I should take it that you are trolling....
Just...wow.... |

I've done that many times. I don't know how much the boss was charging because it was none of my business. I got my standard OT rate at 20k.
(Paid in cash separately from my monthly deposit and not reported as tax...lol?) |

Repost from the following thread should answer some of your questions.

The only case where I would say your whining would be valid is if
- Your boss is having you do extra hours above overtime. You sign up for 30 hours a week you are doing 35 or 40...
- Your are having to travel outside of the school constantly to where the students are, like their house or an another school or business.
-They are doing it at another time outside regular hours. You are an afternoon hagwon worker and they have you come in the morning or on Saturday.
- The boss is farming you out school to school or person to person which is illegal. (unless signed off by the immigration department).
- You have a F- series visa and you could do the classes on your own in a (quasi) legal sense.
Remember you are working for a company/ a business. Ya that 20 dollars an hour for painting is valid for you. NOT if you work for JOE PAINTING company. They will pay you what you sign a contract for.
At the most you can ask your boss for some leeway in the planning time. Maybe you can come in earlier and plan or the boss will be happy with 30 min planning then the one hour before.
Also consider this which would you rather teach one student or 10 plus students all hyped up on sugar and summer time break.
Good Luck
