|
|
My idiot handler is insisting that I go down to immigration to add a second workplace to my ARC before we start camp at another SMOE school across the street next week...
This despite having worked at three different schools (including the one we're going to) in the last 2 years during camp time and never having to do this... Nor any word from any other teacher in my district that they've had to do this...
Just wanted to see if anyone else was being told to do this... Unless a bunch of people jump in to say some stupid new policy has been shoved down the pipe, there's no way I'm spending 3+ hours round trip to go to Immi for something like this... |

Never been requested to do it for a camp. Will they pay for it?
If the camp is at a public school I wouldn't worry about immigration. Maybe people living in other cities (larger cities) have more enforcement, but to me immigration fears are way overblown. |

My SMOE school approached me asking me to work at an elementary school camp nearby. Fortunately I had a choice in the matter and declined.
Is it just me, or does the workload in Public Schools seem to be increasing? |

The way it's set up actually decreases my workload (which is why we set it up that way, lol)
Instead of doing 3 weeks of camp at one school, we have 3 schools get together and the NSETs rotate through each...
Means that instead of planning 3 weeks worth of material, and having to do something different for each period, you create one week worth of material and do the same lesson 3 times each day.
Redundancy Vs. 10x the workload
But ya, definitely didn't think this was a requirement... Coming from the same idiot handler that gave me all of the information for a one year visa extension when all I needed was a single day let's just say I don't trust her reading of immigration policy very much |

Three week camp instead of my usual 1 or 2 (at the most) this summer. Thanks, now I have to split up my vacation days. Hope my co-teachers are having fun at home. |

Are you getting paid for this summer camp? If it's SMOE, probably not. I wouldn't do it unless it was absolutely necessary. |

In a meeting with my IH, VP, and principal I asked to be handed over to the district camp knowing that they were getting extra pay (and they are despite SMOEs letter)... Was promised that I would be given the same if I did camp at our school, no problem...
Should have gotten it in writing... 6 days before camp it was another meeting telling me that ohhh so sorry there is no money... When I told them "Well then I'm not going all out with the worksheets" and offered them examples between what I could do with extra pay (pictures, games, etc etc for the worksheets) and no pay (title, subtitle, blank lines...) the principal threatened to fire me... So instead of making new materials I pulled out worksheets that they had already paid me extra for in the past and we're using those for camp instead of something new...
(Sorry for the rant ) |

It is my understanding that we're employed by SMOE, not our schools, so we don't have to add new workplaces as long as our paycheques still come from SMOE.
In regards to camp, like it or not our contracts state that we work them when we're not using official vacation days. Having to split up our vacay and/or dealing with the inevitable last-minute nature of camps is another story. I'm just coming from the perspective of always having camp unless I have an official vacation day, so I have no sympathy for those who used to get free time off and no longer do. Be happy you got it when you did. As for more work, as in more prep and materials, I would agree with that. Every camp period they expect more and more from me to the point of creating a unique month-long curriculum. We were hired as teachers, not curriculum editors. I don't even mean that as a way to get out of work, I just mean I'm not trained to make such sweeping and involved materials. It's two seperate jobs. It's like asking an author to also do the illustrations, or an actor to also write the script. So, I do it the American way. Half-assed. |
