For Chuseok vacation a couple friends and I are going to Viet Nam, and we leave on the 18th of September. The trouble is, I have a friend coming to teach at my school and he's scheduled to arrive on september 16th. I would really like him to come join us in Viet nam, but he won't have an alien card by then. He's from Canada, so he'd need to get a re-entry visa at the airport, and I'm pretty sure they ask you for your alien card, or at least alien card number when you apply for it. Going through security I'm sure they'd want his alien card too. Is there any way for him to travel to Viet nam without an alien card?

Any help is really appreciated, even if its just a number to call. The sooner we know the sooner he can buy his ticket, or not buy it.

Thanks.

Cant see it happening.

Maybe he'd do better anyway spending the time starting to familiarize himself with where he's going to be living for the next year.

Well, this is one of those times that you would much better call Korean Immigration (preferably at the airport) and ask them because if your friend gets in trouble because of someone's well-meant advice it sure won't be funny at all for any of you.

FACT:

An ARC is a requirement for a re-entry permit.
Leaving without a re-entry permit will cancel his visa/work/status of sojourn.

IT IS NOT POSSIBLE FOR YOUR FRIEND TO JOIN YOU unless he can get his medical and paperwork done in time to get an ARC before you leave (2 days = impossible).

Bottom line = if he enters Korea he is not going with you.

The only other option is for him to go direct from home to Vietnam, enjoy the holiday then travel with you back to Korea and activate his E2 after the holiday. (his arrival and your departure are less than 72 hours apart - not like he will miss any work by showing up at the end of the holiday instead of the beginning of it.)

On a trip to Beijing a few months back, my friend forgot his alien card, and forgot to get a multi entry visa. 45 mins, a form filled out, 30,000 won and 3 hums and 2 ahs later, we were on the plane, and no probs getting back in.

All will be fine!

Forgot and never issued are two very different things. You must apply and obtain an ARC before leaving the country again or your visa is null and void.

I witnessed this exact problem in 2006. My buddy and I came back to Korea early to work a winter camp, which we subsequently found out employed us illegally. Anyway, we were assured that we could go on the trip by the HR guy prior to booking, then my friend ran into a snag because he had a single entry visa and immigration had it on record that he hadn't gotten his ARC yet. His choices were to stay in Korea or give up his visa. He had enough time in Thailand and YBM's HR guy felt bad about guaranteeing a trip that was about to fall apart, so the paperwork was pushed for a new visa while we were on our trip. I was allowed out of the country because I had a multiple re-entry visa, but upon returning I was forced to plead ignorance and throw myself at the mercy of the immigration official. She eventually let me through with a warning, but I wouldn't press my luck again.

This was all before visa regs were tightened. ttompatz and schwa aren't exactly slouches when it comes to these kinds of issues. I'd listen to them.

He may have forgot his card but he was still a "registered alien" - he had an ARC even if it was not on his person.

An "unregistered alien" - no ARC yet - CANNOT get a re-entry permit.

The ONLY exception to this would be an AMERICAN with a MULTI-ENTRY visa - they can leave and re-enter before being registered since they do not need to obtain a re-entry permit.

Since the friend of the OP is Canadian the exception will not apply.
