| So I just had a really great night in Itaewon (or was). I met a lot of great people from various parts of the military. Anyway, to keep it simple it was my friend's going away party and she left. I was by no means biligerant and i was threatened by a marine that if i didn't leave he would 'make me leave.' I wasn't imposing on anything, actually showing then how to get to a bar. At this point it was late and i had no backup nor would i attempt to instigate anything. Anyway, most of the military i have met have been great guys, I'm just pretty pissed about this incident. i guess i just don't really know what else to say. I guess any military who are good guys thank you. I understand that being in the military isn't always a choice, but please don't be threatening for no reason. |

| That's a jar head for ya. Don't take it personally, I am sure with alcohol anyone would have done that. An area that is notorious for binge drinking and hooking up with whatever moves is bound to have an asshat or two in its ranks. Just be glad it didn't escalate. |

I'm guessing he was probably wasted because that was a total D-bag move. I've never had a soldier make an aggressive move on me but I totally believe that could happen in a late night situation.
I really want to trust in the U.S. military but when they make bone head moves like this it makes me mad. Sorry you had to go through this, it's usually not typical of U.S. soldiers to do this (in my experience) but it is known to happen once in a while. |

I understand that being in the military isn't always a choice
The US military is an all volunteer force, so it is always a choice for them. This is very common behavior for soldiers in Itaewon- i see it most nights I go there. |

It's a very good choice for a lot of Americans in order to have job security, education in the military and assistance for higher education out of the military, and it plays a necessary part of the US's infrastructure. |

What "imperial interests"
I guess the British government has no stakes in BP or their monopoly on oil exploration- this could also be seen as "economic exploitation". So the US is not the only country involved in modern-day imperialism.
Boneheads are boneheads the world over. I have met d*ckhead teachers who instigate trouble and try to talk their way out of it. I worked with many d*ckhead officers and soldiers when I was assigned in Korea who would talk the talk and then walk the walk if need be.
But in it all, those are the rotten apples that spoil the bushel. There are way more nice and educated guys serving in the military than these bozos.
As for marines...hehehehe...we secretly call them "the special ed" branch of the US Armed Forces 
You also need to remember that >70% of the military is or has been deployed at least 2 or 3 times to a combat zone during their initial enlistment. PTSD is ripe in the ranks right now.
Also, as another poster has mentioned, it is a "voluntary" job, not mandatory like Koreans. |

| well i guess what gets me about people like that in general (military or not) is why they don't understand how obtuse and ignorant they make themselves look...? I hate to be the movie quote guy but "the loudest man in the room is the smallest man." (american gangster) is so true. i'm all about fights if there is a legit reason but trying to start one to make yourself feel like you're not a douche, let alone when you are surrounded by your buddies, is rediculous. |

It is simply alcohol.
Alcohol makes people do and say stupid things.
I am all for having a drink or two, but a lot of people, no matter who they are or where they work, tend to go overboard when they binge drink. |
