Is there anything out there?
What would I look for in general?
Any specific suggestions?

This is the short answer.

The long answer is: it depends on what you mean by work.

If you have a AT&T/T-Mobile plan and world phone that supports the 2100 3G frequency then you should be able to use your phone while in South Korea. Of course, you'll rack up a hefty international roaming fee.

If you instead want to purchase a new phone that you can then use with a Korean plan. You're SOL for the most part. Korea maintains a IMEI whitelist and only approved devices can use the service even if they get reception. Any device not sold in Korea is not on the whitelist and therefore can not be used unless it is registered.

The only phone I've heard being successfully registered to the IMEI whitelist is back when they approved the Apple iPhone for sale in Korea. Even then, there was plenty of paperwork and fees to be paid in order to get the device cleared. Chances are if that is still possible then you could also get a Galaxy S approved. However, since these phones are already sold in Korea you'd be foolish to waste money (breaking a new contract and paying fees to register the device) with a US handset.

So essentially, any phone that could work on a Korean carrier plan you can already buy in Korea where it'd be cheaper (post fees). In addition, I can't even confirm registering a foreign phone (that is already sold in Korea) is even possible. I guess if you value having the English OS pre-loaded worth hundreds of dollars. iPhones and Android devices can both be "jailbroken" or reflashed.
