I'm thinking of technologies that are eminently plausible, not say, time travel or teleportation. If it seems implausible but you think it isn't, feel free to offer your reasons. I will be.
Personally, I was thinking of an implant that allows you to listen to music, without headphones.
I think this is possible, but I have yet to see a commercial application. There is a cochlear implant available for children with a particular type of hearing loss. It places an implant inside the ear drum, attached to a microphone outside of the body, which restores some level of hearing. My idea is, why can't that micro phone be attached to an MP3 player instead? This would negate the need for head phones and, I assume, offer a superior audio experience.
Obviously, you would need to undergo surgery in order to have the device implanted, but how is this different to breast implants, or any other type of cosmetic surgery?
I thought of integrating a USB port into car stereos about 2 years before a commercial version ever appeared.
I have a few more "imminently plausible tech" ideas, but how about you? |

Bah, years ago my friend bought my old Pentium 75 off me and put it in his trunk, rigged it to boot up winamp on startup, run off the car's battery and be controlled by a numeric keypad on the transmission hump. It didn't even have USB ports. There was no display, so you had to guess what you were doing, but once it was running it was easy to navigate. In a freakin Pontiac Acadian no less!
I guess that's why he's now a near-rich tech developer living in Montreal and I teach English in Korea... |

Yea, there is a difference between thinking of an idea, and selling it to a mass market.
I probably think of an idea a week. Maybe one day one of them will stick and make me a million.  |

Absolutely, in that I would not have bothered to respond as science-fiction is a perfectly correct spelling. Anyways, I fully expect that there will be real cybernetic people in the near future. Well, there already are as new technology is being tested on amputees who are veterans from the Iraq and Afghan conflicts. |

Thanks for giving an answer that relates to my question.
We have smart phones now. I can envision a future where the phone is completely integrated into your body. Cochlear implant for audio input, cornea implant for visual, and the radio receiver/wifi/3G either as a separate component or as a part implanted in your body. Powering it all is a huge hurdle. I'm sure some type of bio-kinetic power source could be developed. Integrating the RAM is an interesting step. I think the processin will just be done via servers, and streamed to the end user.
I can't wait for the day when I can have a HD movie projected, wirelessly, in HD with surround sound, onto the inside of my closed eyelids. |

Digital paint.
Not really paint actually, but a paint-like substance that has the ability to display video, pictures, etc. I envision this totally changing modern homes. You could change the color of your walls at any time. You could watch tv/movies on a screen as large as you like. You could display works of art. You could even have every wall in a room displaying nature and you would feel like you were outdoors. Or how about connect via web cam to a friend's house and have a wall displaying your friend's room and you could talk and interact with that person as if you were in the same room, just without being able to touch each other. |

The Space Elevator
When my friend first told me about this idea a number of years ago I scoffed. I had pictured in my head an actual elevator that went up a shaft that extended to space. Obviously that sounds ridiculous. But what is not so ridiculous is using carbon fiber nanotubes anchored to the Earth and a space station in geosynchronous orbit some distance above the Earth.

In which case there would need to be some manipulation/direct contact with your brain. I guess when this could only result in improvement (not like you could lower its level an more than its at right now) I would look forward to that as well.
Although why is this such a thing you look forward to, does opening your eyes and watching something tire you out too much? |
