The UK issues etiquette guide for upcoming 2012 Olympics.
LONDON � Hold off from hugging an Indian, don't be alarmed if the French are rude and never mistake a Canadian for an American.
Canadian tourists are likely to be quite annoyed about being mistaken for Americans, the guide suggests � urging workers to keep an eye out for maple leaf pins or badges on tourists' clothing.

I agree with that. Canada & the US are two different countries.
That said, our response to being 'annoyed' is to sigh and shake our heads, so I don't forsee any major problems either way  |

I'm annoyed at the fact that Canadians actually have the audacity to get offended when they're mistaken for Americans.
If anything, if an American should be offended if he or she is mistaken for being Canadian.

hearing about Canucks whining about being 'insulted' at being called an American reminds me of Jack Nicholson in A Few Good Men..
I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the blanket of the very freedom I provide, then question the manner in which I provide it. I prefer you said thank you, and went on your way... 
The reason Canucks haven't been invaded is due to that long, undefended border they share with a superpower... don't make it suddenly necessary to defend it...  |

I'm Canadian, but don't get upset when people ask if/assume I'm American. Americans are our best friends and trading partners, and I wouldn't want any other nation to be neighbors with.
The feelings come from a lack of Canadian identity more than a dislike of America. We don't know what we are, but it's not American. When your identity is rooted in NOT being something, to be called that is strange.
You want to see angry, call an Aussie a Kiwi or call a Korean Chinese or Japanese. Canadians will start to seem pretty tame in comparison! |

I am hoping that is sarcasm, Ironically Many of the people that come to attack your country do so by going through our borders first.
You don't exactly provide our country with any freedom, we had this before you, and if anything our country has more freedoms than you do in America.
The reason we haven been invaded is because we do very little to piss people off globally, and even if we did get invaded it would almost certainly be as a staging area to invade you.
Not many terrorists see the strategic importance of Winnipeg or Moose Jaw.
You guys also have a long undefended border , two actually, on both ends, youve been invaded how many times? NOt counting the time where is Canadians ( well technically British since we were not yet a country) invaded you and burned your White house to the ground.
You may not want to say that you are an UNDEFENDED border is stopping us from being invaded, especially when you can't stop Mexicans from illegally crossing one that you only minimally protect in the south.
That being said, yeah I dont mind if I am asked if I am American, I just say "nope I am Canadian" but I would get upset with anyone who says "same thing" just as the reverse is true for an American. |

But Canadians complaining about being mistaken for American is kind of like Koreans complaining when someone asks if they are Chinese - whoever guesses American or Chinese has odds on their side, so there's no need to get offended. |

Notice I used the present tense.
Even so, I don't think the USSR ever had the capability to invade and control the whole of Canada, even if the US sat back and did nothing. It would have been logistically impossible. |

Oh it "does things" does it. Globally it does mostly bad things. Even the assistance that you offer other countries usualy results in worse conditions for that country. So yes you have MANY reasons to be hated.
As for Canada one of the things we did for you was take over virtually ALL of your air traffic on 9/11. George Bush went on the air and thanks about 50 countries for their assistance, and left Canada off the list.
Even when we make a tremendous compassionate act like that for Americans we get spit in the face. So yes, we do things to, we do COMPASSIONATE things. Is why golbally we are loved, and America is despised |
