Hello, I have a problem that I need advice on. i worked for an academy for the past 2 years. Before leaving, they found out that I wanted to come back to Korea again after a few months. They wanted to extend my current visa so that I could possibly work for them again. I did so under the understanding that I may NOT work for them again. I told them I definitely would not guarantee working for them again. So, now I am home in Canada and have found a job, but my former school refuses to release my visa.
I had asked them previously to cancel my visa when I first started looking again and they assured me that they had done so, but they didn't follow through with it. I do not have a contract with them to work for them again, but my visa is still valid for them. I have a new school waiting for my visa paperwork to go through, but it can't until they cancel my visa. If I can't get them to cancel it soon, I will lose my job.
What can I do? Can they legally keep my visa valid without any contract? Please let me know if there is anything i can do. |

Have you spoken to immigration?
If it were me I'd call them and explain what is going on and ask them to cancel the Visa.
You are not working in Korea so really the employer should not be doing that.
Sorry to hear about your problem. |

How do I call the Korean immigration from within Canada? Is there a way to call the one in Korea? Or do I have to call the consulate here in Canada tomorrow. |

Not too sure of the number from overseas. Does anyone else know?.
I would call immigration in Korea, not the Canadian Consulate. Here is their website - http://www.hikorea.go.kr/pt/index.html
Good luck.

Bad news is that IF you have a valid re-entry permit AND a valid ARC then there is no easy or cheap solution to your problem.
IF you are close to the consulate you MAY be able to go to them and get your current status of sojourn canceled but I doubt it. It is worth a try but don't be surprised if they tell you they can't do it. If they will do it you will have to go there in person to get it done (cancel your entry permit and status of sojourn).
The only guaranteed solution is not cheap nor is it convenient.
Fly to Korea, enter Korea on your current ARC/re-entry permit,
LEAVE Korea again and HAND in your ARC thus canceling your visa and re-entry permit. Make sure your re-entry permit is in fact canceled.
Now you can re-enter Korea as a tourist and begin the visa process again.
AFter the paperwork is done you can make your visa run to Japan.
The alternatives are:
a) return to your old employer,
b) choose another country or
c) just wait till your current ARC expires so you can start again.
