State AARP celebrating Social Security with apple pie
by From staff reports
Charleston Daily Mail
CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- AARP West Virginia will celebrate the 75th Anniversary of an American institution - Social Security - with an apple pie giveaway in downtown Charleston from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. today at BB&T Square, 300 Summers St.
On Aug. 14, 1935, President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed into law the Social Security Act, establishing a benefit that generations of Americans have depended upon for economic security.
According to AARP, Social Security is especially important to West Virginians, considering that the state has a higher percentage of its residents receiving Social Security benefits than any other state in the nation.
Nearly 24 percent of all residents receive Social Security benefits. For one in four older adults, it is their only source of income. |
