i was looking through the job listings on this site and a few others and i saw some that blatantly said "no gyopo's please" and "prefer white native speakers only". i understand this is a business to them and white = $$$ apparently but what can i do to get myself a fair deal work-wise?

how can i make them understand that i'm just as good as a white native english speaker? i am korean-american, born in the seoul but my family moved to the states when i was 10 months old for crying out loud! should i pretend i don't speak any korean?

Look at another hagwon, no point getting hung up on one particular hagwon that doesn't want you.

I'm still trying to find a way around "female teachers only". Confused ... Tootsie anyone?

There is no rights legislation prohibiting discrimination in South Korea, or else it ain't enforced, not sure which.

You are just as good. But that's not the point. The point is that there is a preference. The agencies have it because the client has it.

There are ads that ask for females only.
There are ads that ask for Gyopo only.
There are ads that ask for a North American accent only.

And there are often deep-seated reasons for those preferences.

These days I see more job ads for Kyopos and F4s only than I do for whites only.

koreans dont employ the most qualified people. they employ their idea of the most qualified person..

go figure......

edit: it explains why they employ americans Very Happy

P.s. dont take it too seriously guys... its a joke

If your on an F-4, tons of part times jobs want you....just get 2-3 of them and you'll make a hell of a lot more than any newbie in a hagwon or PS job....or just teach privates all day like some I know.

f-4 visa beats e-2 visa jobs by a mile usually....

unless your the sad gyopo on an E-2 visa...met a few of those...hope you like public schools or big chains like CDI.

I get the sense that many people just accept this discrimination saying "its obviously bad but that's just the way it is, that's what the korean parents want."

It's our job (we tend to be more educated than the average Korean parent) to start consiousness raising and teach them that it's wrong. Everyone should be given equal opportunity (irregardless of color, nationality, and whether they have male appendage or not).

So i feel angry for you OP. It is very unfair what is happening to you. Very unfair indeed. If i detect any level of discrimination from a Korean then i will call them out on it. Good luck with your job hunt. Hopefully you'll find an educated open-minded employer soon.

Ukon is right, F4 has many advantages over e2. Follow ukon's advice. And e2 people please; feeling sorry for an f4? Basically an F4 can do anything in this country except vote.

You going to pay me for this?

I mean, who are you to tell me what my job is and isn't?

Sure, when given the opportunity, I've more than once tried to bust up pre-conceived notions about race and such - but it's not my frakkin' job.

True! Our job is to teach English contrary to the ideas of those who try to say we have some sort of extra responsibility (e.g., to learn the language, to change the society). Hogwash! Do it if you wanna but don't expect others to feel they must.

Take up your case of discriminating Hagwons with Ben Wagner or Andrea Vandom. I'm sure they'll care.

Seriously, dude it's how things are. Deal with it. Market yourself in a different fashion. Or try a public school. Or use your connections.

I'd disagree there. F-4 jobs pay more but they usually require at least 2 yrs experience and the jobs are for more specialized English like business or online teaching, etc. Only way to get that is through teaching at a hagwon but, most hagwons aren't gonna hire an F-4. So your stuck in a catch 22.

For entry level jobs. Especially for just racking up experience like the kind you need to get F-4 jobs. E-2s have it MUCH easier. You guys have ALOT of choices. And if you ever get tired of a city, you can pack up and leave without problems. Besides the hassle of transferring of the visa.
