Hi all,
I was just offered a job at a place in Dongtan. Does anyone know what the place is like? How far is it from Seoul really?
Thanks! |

It's a part of Suwon and it is a very nice place. I went there, once, for a housewarming party for a Korean teacher and it was a very nice area. It's very new and very clean. There are plenty of stores and shops and it is very close to the Seoul subway line #1. The area is fine. What about the school? Do you know anything about the school?
BTW, in case you're looking for where it is, this is the closest subway station- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seodongtan_Station
It's one stop from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Byeongjeom_Station
The #1 subway line is a good line to live close to because it runs through many cities, like Pyeongtaek, Suwon, Anyang, and Seoul. There are rapid subway that can help you get to Seoul much faster.
Just click on "Cyber Station" on the lower left and the station of your choice to see the schedule. The rapid trains on the #1 line go to Yongsan. http://www.seoulsubway.co.kr/eng/ |

Nice new city, but you have to ask how far your apt will be from the school. Very high priced apt complexes there. |

No, it is NOT part of Suwon, it's part of Hwaseong-si. It sits in between Suwon and Osan.
It really depends on where you live. Seodongtan is the end of the subway line for half the trains going south (the rest go to Cheonon-Asan). All they did was add a passenger terminal at the train yard. It is way the hell out of the way, but they do have a few maeul buses that go there. More likely you would live in Byeongjeom and ride the bus to work as there are very few small apartments in Dongtan proper. Even if you do live in Dongtan, the subway stations (Seodongtan/Byeongjeom) are both on the western edge of the area. Plus side is that there is a great bus system in the area to get you there, and taxi rides are base fare from pretty much anywhere to the subway.

The rapid trains are few and far between, and because of the number of stops they make beforehand, you are almost guaranteed to never get a seat. The plus side, Byeongjeom is a terminal station, so half the trains going up start there so you can usually get a seat on those.
Sorry sojusucks, all your comments are about 2 inches off the mark .
Seriously though, I lived there for two years and it was a decent place to live. The key to getting to Seoul is that there are about 6 rapid buses that go to Gangnam from the area in about 35-60 minutes depending on traffic. Also, you are two stops from Suwon Station, which has the national trains. You can take one of those for 2500 won and be at Yongsan or Seoul Station in 29/31 minutes respectively. Physically it's about 60 km from the center of Seoul, and on the subway it takes 70 minutes from Byeongjeom to Seoul Station. The rapid train will get you there in about 40 minutes, depending on traffic and time of day (it will wait for other subways/trains to pass by at stations). It's a few stops from Songtan, the airbase, and it's assortment of western food. Many buses are available to get you to the Bundang subway line if you want to go to the southeast side of town.
So great bus system, proximity to the national trains, decent subway station, you can get there in 45-60 minutes. If I didn't have a job, I'd jump on that one in a heartbeat. I really liked living there. |

Thanks for all that! Doesn't look like I'll be taking it anyway - contract seems a bit iffy.. |
