Okay,
I don't have all my information, and can't remember specific dates pretty much due to the fact I'm freaking out right now and am completely powerless. Heres the story:
My contract ends on the 10th. I've signed a contract with another school to start work on the 23rd. Needless to say, I passed up the plane ticket for cash thinking there would be no problem. My school's HR girl came TODAY to collect my family's passports and ARC's to have our visas extended for 30 days. The girl came back at 7:00 tonight and said we couldn't get an extension because we didn't have a plane ticket, but she'd try again on Monday with an E-ticket. She did not give me our passports.
I think that our visas expire tomorrow. I'm desperately hoping I'm wrong on this, but without my card or passport I have no idea. I'm pretty much terrified that on Sunday immigration is going to bang on my door and toss my family into a detention cell till we can get our passports and be kicked out.
I'm royally pissed at myself for not being up on this. At the same time, I'm really pissed off at my school for screwing this up. I don't work for a new or a small school. It's got several branches and has been around for quite a long time. They should know how to handle this kind of thing!
So here I sit without passports and no idea what is going to happen to us. Any ideas? Advice? I don't drink, so that's not much of an option I'm afraid. |

Off the top of my head, would ferry tickets to Japan suffice? And couldn't your new school just extend for you? I'm sure this happens all the time. |

I'd go for the ferry, but I don't have our passports till Monday afternoon. I'm hoping my school gets this sorted out. I can't believe this is happening, to be honest. I've been on work visas and lived overseas a long time, so I'm not a rookie. First time this kind of thing has ever happened. |

What is the end date on your ARCs? Perhaps the ARCs go until the 10th? |

Don't you get like 14 days to leave the country? It might not be as bad as it seems.
If not you could report the passports stolen, play the sympathy card.

That's the thing, I'm not entirely sure. I'm hoping I'm worrying over nothing, but my school has kept my passport and alien card. You'd think they could have at least extended it to the end of my contract today. Now here is the weekend and nothing can get done till Monday. |

If there have been no extended breaks of time in your contract, it's possible that your ARC expires when your contract expires. |

Go get the extension yourself. I got a 30 day extension with no plane ticket easily. I just told them I was hanging around to do some sightseeing. This was a few years back, maybe they're more strict now...
Your school holding your passports is a load of crap you should not be putting up with. |

Alternatively, you could ask your current school for a letter of release and then get the new visa with your new school. You'll need your passport and arc. There's no reason not to have that.
You're right, it's a bit late. Good luck. |

It's not the end of the world - get your paperwork and cards back a.s.a.p. and go to the office yourself - I needed an outgoing ticket and my passport to show that my contract ended after my ARC. You MAY not need an outgoing ticket if you bring them a copy of your new contract and show that you'll be staying legally once that starts.
They can process everything right at the desk, shouldn't take any time at all if everything is on the up and up. I'd text someone at your school now to inform them that you need things back in the morning. |

Keep in mind though overstaying your visa can have other consequences in the future beyond the fine. They do put a permanent note in your file that you overstayed your visa. |

i encountered them and it was more incovenience that 'consequences' after being out of korea and the applying for a new E2 I had to go to the consolate for an interview. They told me it was related to my overstay from before and it was about as intensive as getting your drivers license renewed. |

Well, things worked at the end. They always seem to do, thankfully. Our visas did expire Saturday, but immigration magnimoniously (spelling?) extended our stay until today. My current, well, ex employer sent me an email last night saying our passports were with immigration. I told my new school that, and took our applications for visas there today. They called me about 45 minutes ago saying our visas were fine and that I can pick everything up tomorrow morning.
