There are a number of students at my school who don't go to hogwans. I am considering suggesting to my co-teacher that I'd like to volunteer an afternoon or two during the week for these kids.

Is there anyway to pull this off without looking like a pushover or should I forget the idea now and save myself some trouble?

I do it sometimes, and it gives me leverage when I am "too busy" to do something they ask of me after hours.

I just worried about being over burdened with work. I don't want to send the massage that I'm a push-over who'll work for free.

I hear you. It depends on your situation, really. If you have the time for an hour or two a week with the special students, do it during office hours. If you've got your lessons sorted, that is.

I have a soft spot for the kids of single or poor (or both!) parents, who can't go to hagwons. I help the "aftercare" teacher whenever I've got the time, and we turn it into an English lesson.

My school district payed for those kids to have extra classes with me. Contact the district office and see if they will stump up some cash, and then spend it on supplies. That way you don't look like a push over at all.

It is a good idea. It would also look good on your resume as it shows dedication and initiative.

It may mean a lot of extra work but this could be a trade off down the line.

Go for it. I was willing to do anything for students during work hours as long as the school stayed out of my hair.
