|
|
I'm seriously thinking about doing a Masters is ESL, but I'm having a hard time deciding which field I should pursue. I'm wondering if anyone has completed their Masters and if they could help?? I would like to teach in a University at some point. The fields are..
Master of Education (MEd) in TESOL
Master of Arts (MA) or Science (MS) in applied linguistics
MA in English with an emphasis in TESL
MA in teaching (MAT) in ESL
Thanks |

My guess on the MAT would be that would be a degree that has a practicum and enables you to teach in public schools back home.
Real M.Eds should have more credit hours than an MA. Also an M.Ed's difference between an MA should be it looks at both practical and theoretical areas of a subject, while the MA looks at more theoretical areas.
I use the word should, as some schools do their own thing, but in NA, most schools have this seperation.
I've never heard of an MA in English with TESL specialization...where are you looking at that?
If you are looking to teach ESL at a university back home, why not see what degrees professors in those programs have, and get what seems the common one they all have? It is probably in linguistics, which IMO doesn't make the best fit for teaching ESL...researching ESL yes, teaching, no. Do you want to be more of a teacher, or a researcher? I know to teach ESL at my old university you had to have a level 2 TESL Ontario/Canada certification, which requires courses with practicums. |

I troll the middle east board now and then, and from what I've gathered, if you are ever interested in making 5k+ a month tax free (starting, and low balling) then applied linguini is the way to go. |
