Anyone who spent time in Palawan, Luang Prabang, and Burma able to tell me if Skype works reliably and consistently with good voice quality?
In Palawan, I'll be using something called "Globe Tattoo Broadband" but I have no idea how jittery/reliable it is...esp. when calling from Palawan back to the states.
Thanks. |

skype pretty much doesnt work in burma b/c of the slow connection....a high end hotel like Traders in yangon might have a better connection but even there it is doubtful....

Globe works fine in the cities (but often the broadband is only 384k - 2mbs). If you get lucky and get a good connection then skype is ok. Otherwise you are SOL.
It doesn't work outside the capital.
You may have better luck with smartbro (wider coverage across the country) but again, outside the city you will be limited to dial-up type speeds (56-192kbps). I have both and while the globe tattoo is faster in the major cities I always get better coverage around the country with my smartbro ( a lot of times when there is NO coverage at all from globe).
Another point is that with smart is that if you register (on-line) after you get your smarbro dongle you can get unli (24/7 connections) for p200 for 4 days. The usual rate is p10 per half hour. Globe is p5 clocked in 15 minute increments.

From what I recall, Louang Phrabang has fast internet, and this was a year and a half ago. There were definitely places that had Skype available, and IIRC I was uploading boatloads of photos to Facebook there. I remember Vang Vieng (pit of existence) was Korea-fast, but LP wasn't bad either. I think you'll be okay. And in LP you'll have the luxury of Skyping with a saffron robed monk chilling next to you. |

Thanks guys. Luang Prabang sounds like a first choice, followed by Palawan. I'll be 30 minutes outside Puerto Princesa in the countryside, although supposedly, previous guests have picked up Internet using Global and Smart. I just hope it's a good connection. |
