Hi,
Myself & my friend have just found out that we have been put on to the waiting list for a job with EPIK for this autumn. As we obviously didn't have any idea that this could happen we have quit our jobs & given notice on our accomodation. We are now left in a rubbish situation & are not sure what our options are from here!!
We still really want to come to Korea but are not sure what we do as EPIK has all of our documents.
Can anybody tell us-
- Do we need the same documents for private schools as we did for EPIK?
- Is it advisable to come to Korea & try to find work while we are there?
- If we did try to find work while in Korea what would we need to bring with us & would a school still reimburse our airfare?
Any advice or information will be gratefully recieved! |

Extremely doubtful, especially considering you're going to have to go on a visa run which the school will have to pay for, which is difficult to do if you haven't taught here before, and pretty much impossible if you haven't taught here before and you're not American. |

Forgive me if this information isn't up to date, but the immigration laws seem to change rather quickly here.
If it is still true that first time teachers need to have an interview at the consulate in their own countries, I would strongly advise against this plan. You would end up flying to Korea, flying back home for your interview/visa, flying back to Korea and only getting reimbursed for 1/3rd of your flight costs. If this has changed, then you'd still have to fly to Japan for a visa.
While it is much more convenient to find a school while in Korea, if you're in your home country and haven't taught in Korea before, I'd suggest finding another job while at home.
-Also: It's always advisable to have multiple copies of all of your documents. |

Sorry to hear that you two got shafted by EPIK, although I'm sure more stories like yours will come out of the woodwork in the next few weeks...
Same documents, and if it's your first time in Korea, you need to get your work visa from your home country, so flying here to look for work isn't really realistic, unless you can afford to fly back home.
I'd start working with recruiters if you're set on coming to Korea - you'll be able to find a hagwon job before the end of August, assuming you can get new copies of your documents by then.
My only other advice, if you're set on public school & financially able, is to wait it out. People WILL drop out, people will pull runners in September. Spots will open, but they might not be for another month or more. |

thank you so much for all the advice!
we pretty much thought it wasn't wise to head over without the job & visa sorted, but its good to have that confirmed.
i guess we just have to get back on the job hunt. we aren't in a financial situation where we can wait it out unfortunately. is it a wise move to contact a lot of recruiters or just to pick a few to work with?
we have copies of all our documents but as we sent the original criminal records check i think we may just have to get a new one of those.
oldtactics - thank you very much for your words of advice, they were very reassuring & its really good to hear some confident words that we will find work soon. |

| You can use the copies to start looking for work now while you obtain originals again for the new visa app. |
