My brother recently won a good cellphone and he doesn't want it. He will send it to me here in Korea. I am aware that it won't work here but I will be travelling in South East Asia soon and I would like to have it with me.
The phone's RRP would be about $430.
Any tips? What is Korea's policy on gifts? The customs website doesn't seem to mention it anywhere. |

Have him take it out of the box and write used phone. If you don't mind paying a customs fee, have him declare it so they don't steal it. It's worth the money if you really want it. |

send it via postal service, NOT UPS or FedEx. EVERY thing I've had sent via FedEx was opened and I was taxed on, especially because the total value INCLUDES the price of shipping. Every thing I've had sent via USPS/KoreanPost has made it unmolested, again in part to the low cost keeping the total price down.
But they will stick it to you whenever possible. |

I got a package today from my Mom in Canada that says "Clothes, magazines, snacks" on it. Value $200. Thought customs would have for sure opened it because of the value she put, but it got through no problem.
It's a crap shoot about what gets opened as far as I can tell. |

If it's marked as a gift then I don't think customs will stop it. |

They taxed me 30,000 won on my birthday present from my father a few years back. Milk Duds, 2 packs of new boxer shorts, 2 shirts, and three books on teaching methodology. A grand total of about 90 dollars (the majority of which were the books) worth of stuff, and I had to pay 30,000 (again, because they tax the value of the shipping, too). |

Just list it as used and undervalue it. Maybe 50 USD. Get your brother to tick gift too on the checkbox. |
