|
|
I am thinking about applying at Yeungnam University in Gyeongsan.
The salary seems all right but they seem to be looking for an awful lot of people.
Does anyone have any information about the place?
Is it a good place to teach?
How's the staff there?
Thanks,
J.K. |

I hear they will be pairing foreign language instructors with Korean co-teachers next semester to make up for the teacher shortage. |

Why would there be a shortage of teachers there?
Is there some sort of problem?
I thought they had like 30-40 teachers or something already. |

The co-teacher thing might not be true - but it's not a joke. I heard it from some friends in Daegu. |

The threads are continually deleted on here, but Yeongnam just let go of something like 25+ teachers, regardless of education, because of some form of problems they had with a new director. It was reported on here that they signed a petition to oust the director, but that the university responded by firing everyone. Another person said there are two sides to the story. |

We do this at our university, but we don't teach the same class at the same time. We split the hours (and it's sort of been a failure that they plan to modify). It's not due to a shortage of teachers, though. |

Aha, I thought you meant two teachers in the same class room like at public schools - which would of course not solve any teacher shortages |

I think that the implications are that the instructors still teach the same 9-12 (whatever) hours a week, but instead of meeting each class twice a week, they will be meeting twice as many classes (within the teaching hours period), but only one meeting a week per class. Teaching hours stay the same, but grading and testing time doubles. |

What have been some of the failures you have experienced. It's an interesting idea, never heard of it at the university level. |

I am a current teacher at Yeungnam U. Working here has been my worst experience in about 10 years in Korea.
Kimkim,
If you are serious about teaching English I would suggest looking elsewhere. Education seems not to be a priority here. I won't go into details on a public forum but I would highly recommend to anyone looking at Yeungnam to investigate a little. Ask around. |

They are planning this in reverse at my current job. Same class hours, half as many classes. |
