My friend's fiance was hoping she could buy him a GSM cellphone in Korea because they're better than the ones in Canada. I heard that you can't use a Korean cellphone in Canada. But he thinks that you can use a GSM cellphone. Does anyone have any info about this? I would really appreciate it. |

Not gonna happen.
Phones in Korea are CDMA.
If she wants GSM phone (where you can just change the SIM) buy it in the Philippines, China, Thailand, etc.
(China has the coolest ones with the most features and lowest prices).

I don't think that you can use Chinese GSM phones in North America unless they are quad band. I think that China uses the European bands. I've used Chinese dual band cell phones in a couple countries in Europe with no problem at all, with a couple different European SIM cards in them. That's why I'm very sure that a Chinese phone would have to be quad band to work in North America.
I think that new Korean phones have GSM capability. I'm not really sure though what bands. I'm also not sure that it really use GSM and not simply 3G. I know that European 3G phones will work in North America (in 3G areas) because I've done it.
Another problem though is that you'd have to get the phones unblocked to use them with a foreign carrier. Not that they can't be unlocked. I think that it's always a software block. The problem might be that since a lot of these phones aren't available in North America or Europe, you may have to look harder to find someone who CAN unlock them.
But i'm also curious if anyone has tried using a new model Korean phone in North America or Europe with a local SIM card from that country. |
