My husband and I are leaving for Korea at the end of the month. We are wanting to bring our dog with us however we are not on a direct flight, and the dog has to go in the cargo section either way due to being over the allowed in-cabin weight (only slightly but still, he cant fly in the cabin).

We are wondering about shipping him as cargo a few weeks after we have left and are settled in. He could stay with family members and then one of them could take him to the airport and we would receive him on the other end. My rationale for this involves a few things. We arrive on the day our contract starts...being sent straight to the school with the dog being left in a foreign apartment after 14 hours on a flight sounds awful and if we pick him up on a friday we would have the weekend to get him used to everything before having to go back to work on the monday.

My questions are: does anyone have experience doing this (sending a dog via cargo without being on the same flight), and if so I would appreciate some general information about reccomendations for the airline to use and whethere this will actually work.

I also wonder about immigration-- because the paperwork has to be done a few days before the dog gets on the plane, can the family member attach the documents to his kennel and then I get ahold of them when I bring him through immigration/customs?

Also, leaving him with family for the entire year is not an option which is why we plan to bring him.

It might be a bit too late, but you should really look into bringing your pup with you on your flight. It is really pretty easy and the toughest part is the anxiety. I brought my cat with me (even though I had to change planes in Korea) and he did just fine. He is a big boy, so he had to go in cargo, but I got some meds from the vet, didn't have any problems at the airports and we both made it here, a little worse for the wear, but in one piece and in good health Smile

One site that helped me a lot was this one - http://www.animalrescuekorea.org/forums/index.php

Here are some other links that might provide some more info for you -

If you still can't or choose not to take him with you, I hear that Delta has a great cargo/animal shipping option and you should be able to find a decent company (or one who can help you) by doing a google search of your local area. That's what I did before finally deciding to just do it myself.
