I got a korean co-worker who wants to do a road trip in January for 2 weeks. They will arrive in NY from Korea. I don't live out there so I don't go there but I might later. Small places like a great mom and pop restaurant is cool too. More than just places from a tour. So yeah, much appreciated. |

I'd highly recommend doing this in the Summer when the weather is warm with good road conditions. January is the deep freeze of Winter when it starts really snowing, getting freezing cold, and downright yucky. The weather tends to be more extreme in the US compared to Korea's so it's not just chilly or only a light fluffy 2 cm snow when it blows through. It's also possible to see sunny, dry, and very bitterly cold weather instead of snow and ice, but Winter ice and snow is expected as they are already seeing lots of recently. The largest interstates are cleared quickly during and after Winter storms, but the compacted ice in many other areas off the interstates make Winter driving unpleasant if not risky.
Otherwise, hop in a late model front wheel drive or 4 wheel drive with a US Atlas or GPS navigation and some tunes without a course plotted. |

I'm from the Northeast and I would say avoid at all costs in the winter. That said, the DC area is basically Seoul weather and shouldn't be too bad. |

Ick, yeah, a roadtrip in the northeast U.S. in January is an awful idea. It's a great part of the country to see, but that time of year it will just be cold, frozen, and possibly dangerous. |

your co-worker doesn't know what they're getting into.
Delay until May.
Or tell them to stay in NYC for 2 weeks. Lots to do there, museums, Broadway, Korean restaurants- the works |

So I told her road trip is probably a big no no. Now she's thinking about flying to Florida for a week. Is it sunny year round there? I read somewhere Seattle has more sunny days than Florida. |

Great time to go to the Sunshine state, but it's possibly chilly all the way down into Miami with the kind of Winter blowing through this year. It already got cold in Florida recently, but nothing like snow, icy roads, and frozen conditions further North. I'd say it's a go, but why not just go some place really tropical for Winter vacation? And better yet, Asia has many more tropical places well equipped for tourism than the Americas. They may not speak much English in Korea and Japan, but they speak enough in the Philippines and other places down there to suit international tourists needs. If in Korea, I'd go with an Asian destination as I'm doing. It just doesn't make sense to fly 9,000 miles to chilly barely tropical Florida or way over priced high crime rate Caribbean destinations. I found more English is spoken in tropical Asia than in tropical Americas and it has a more peaceful atmosphere with lower costs as an added bonus. Also SE Asia offers better tourist services from locals with a positive, "can do," work ethic attitude you won't find in most of the Americas including the USA, Mexico, and the Caribbean. |

My mom's in Florida right now and it's not super warm. If she wants warm, why not go to San Diego? Is she dead set on the East Coast? |

San Diego isn't especially warm in January either. It is also currently getting drenched. |

I was just thinking it's closer and SoCal is a much better place for sightseeing than Florida. |

Hawaii still nice this time of year? Yeah, they want New York. Just for future reference, what are good places to see in NY, DC, and philly? Small or Big is all good to me. |

What good places are there to see in NY and DC? Really? Isn't it pretty obvious? Or do you mean non-touristy stuff? |

Non-tourist areas would be good. I think they give a representation of the area. |
