All I can say is "Who?"
and the only thing Canada has done for the arts has been to export our TV and movie actors to the US. |

I disagree.
If this wasn't the same weekend as the Leisure Games in Chuncheon, I'd definitely be there.
Happy to support events like this, nice to know that they're still planning them. |

With what?
Are any of those people/groups notable?
I don't think so.
We really dazzled the world at the olympics with our tribute to the aboriginals and our "Really? I thought he/she/they were dead" singers. At least like any foreign band kicking around Korea Sotto Gamba has the requisite song about Ajuma...
The height of Canadian animation has been Ren and Stimpy which happened a long time ago and I can't imagine they're showing here..
and I can only think of one or two movies produced in Canada that are worth watching.
About the only thing that has been a real home grown entertainment media success success is Corner Gas. It's about the only thing we've made that hasn't eventually sold itself out to the US. |

Good time to corner the ambassador to bitch about service at the Canuk embassy.
Anyone got some sticks and poster board?
Canadian Embassy In Korea
3rd world service at 1st world prices!
But they can afford to splash for this.
Boo to the ambassador and our foreign service.
Got your priorities screwed up in a big way.
But I supposed it keeps the maple sap harvesters in business.
<end of rant for now>

Ok, I will ask...what time do Gordie and the boys start playing?
I call first set opener "Looking for a Place to Happen"
As for Sunnyvale's comment, it is times like that I wish Daves had a "like" feature on it. It is only a matter of time till a Canuck gets on here and cut and pastes all great things that came from the Canadian entertainment industry from wiki. |

I am a Canuck.
and I freely admit that while we export lots of talent, our home grown stuff is sub-par. Can you name any really great movies that are entirely Canadian made (not documentaries)? Men with Brooms was a reasonable comedy, and there was another one I watched long ago that wasn't bad but I forget the name. Something about some girls in a school.. I think one of them died.
How about Entertainment TV programs? Corner gas, This hour has 22 minutes, but it's very political. Degrassi is probably the most successful.
Music that hasn't sold out to the US? Great Big Sea?
Buble?
Animation? Anything beyond Ren and Stimpy?
Feel free to provide examples, instead all I've seen is lots of name calling and nothing to actually contradict what I said.
So far you guys have had 3 kicks at the can and nada.
Canada produces talent, not so much content. So a Canadian show based around content is not overly thrilling.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_Canadian_animation
If you'd like your wiki examples, we've got 3 time slots of animation and the history of animation is pretty dry. Very little in terms of content a little about festivals, government mandated series, and what a few notable animators have contributed to projects around the world in terms of skill and resources.
Actually we can't even claim ren and stimpy it was only created by a Canadian, but actually done in the US. Another item not really Canadian. |

A thought on your "sold out to the US" statement. So if someone has the oppurtunity to make a better career/more money and has to move to another country to do so, that is selling out? Because, (I assume you are a teacher) that would make you and I a sellout (according to you) for being here in Korea.
What is so wrong with going to the US and making it bigger than one already is? If you crack the US market in the entertainment industry, you have a great chance at cracking the global market. All the power to ya in my opinion.
As for Canadian talent, that jacka$$ Harper took a huge chunk out of the budget for the Arts in his last budget. That accounts, imo, for alot of the problems the industry faces today.
I know a few independent directors who have done some amazing stuff, both animation and film. It is it their fault they have not received the exposure others would consider "success"?
Watch the film One Week. Independent film, very Canadian and just plain awesome! |

It depends on how they go about. Simply going to another country to be famous isn't selling out. The Barenaked Ladies are a good example. Canadians in every single small town across Canada supported them for years with concert tickets, merchandise sales, etc. In the mid 90s they finally got a big hit in the US. They basically disappeared from Canada, so much so that they wrote a song apologizing before they really came back.
After 3 tours of 30+ stops in Canada, they suddenly reduced it to the big ones. Montreal/Toronto/Vancouver plus 1 or 2 more
They didn't need Canada anymore, they were big in the US!
that's a sell-out. They've made amends, and done better tours.
They usually sign with an american label and spend all their time in the US. Are they really Canadian anymore? Sure..born there..but that's it.
I wasn't an entertainment figure in Canada, so my coming to Korea for life or work are entirely different.
and as many people will painfully remind us on the boards every day, most people really aren't gone that long, and they stay painfully true to their roots while they're here.
Harper is an idiot. He's sold out to the US big time. The Canadian DMCA is a joke. I've written my MP many times.
and yeah I might consider it their fault since the government has mandated a certain percentage of content in all mediums be Canadian. So if you can't make it in a market where the government says you must be given air/tv/theater time yeah.. it kind of is your fault.
Especially when there is actually so little competition for some of that medium.
While there are a lot of Canadian bands moving through the ranks, they're mostly using Canada as a stepping stone to get elsewhere.
TV, animation, film, there isn't much coming out of Canada that is strongly notable in terms of whole productions. Just pieces here and there. |

That doesn't mean it will be good or that the Canadian content will be great. The last *flavor of the month bubble gum pop* concert anywhere in the world was crowded. Pancakes and syrup are a bigger draw than Canadian animation |

I'll only go if I can bitch about Ottawa, the number of seats The Bloc Qubcois has and the number of Newfoundlanders in Alberta.
Looking forward to it. Hope Rick Mercer is somehow a part of it. |

I don't get it. I thought the government's job was to govern. Not pump
money into arts that nobody else wants to buy. |
