I want to take a weekend escape to Seoul.

I have never been there other than the airport.

So, I would like to know the best area of Seoul (hopefully close to the bus terminal).

By best, I mean western restaurants, shopping and good nightlife.

Also, does the subway connect with all of Seoul.... kind of like in Busan?

Some of my favourite areas in Seoul are Myeongdong Market - a big shopping area with various restaurants, and Yeoido Park - a nice park on the Han River where you can rent bikes.

If you are lucky you can catch some great live music in Hongdae (an arty/indie part of seoul). There are many clubs and restaurants there too. You'll also find clubs and Western restaurants in Itaewon.

I live in Yeonsinnae in North West Seoul and that is a really cool area too with some cool shops and restaurants.

Seoul is well connected by Subway. The Subway network is extensive and on par with other modern international cities. Personally, I think the Seoul Subway beats London and NYC, though it needs more trains during peak times. Too often I've been pushed in with the flow of people and crammed in like a sardine.

It sounds like Itaewon would be the best fit for you, as it's loaded with Western food, has some nightlife of its own and is close to the hotspots of Hongdae and Apgujeong, and pretty close to the city's major shopping areas. And yeah, Seoul's subway shows Busan to be the relative backwater that it is.

Hongdae (hongik University stop) and Sinchon (a few subway stops from Hongik on line 2) fit your description and are in my opinion the best areas in Seoul!

The run-down pig's head soup n rice n soju hovels round the back of the art cinema in Insadong.

I like the characters you see around there. We're in downtown Seooul yet these places are full of old korean guys that seem like farmers from Jeolla.

Depends on what your definition of "best" is.

I like the shady places and the run down old parts of town. You meet real people there and find out about the underground scene in Korea. It matches my personality.

Yesoninnae is nice to check out, and as TJ has indicated, free of white faces, but it's also full of punk high school kids.

Every foreigner knows of Hongdae these days, even those who are coming to Korea but haven't set foot yet.

Seems like Itaewon Pt. 2, just basing that on the sheer # of foreigners there. The real question is, will it ever be as greasy/sleazy as Itaewon?? (or has it already become like that??)

I guess they need some juicy girls...

Ooph, see what dirty foreigners do to an environment?!?!? Cool

Hongdae is amazing, that's why. Forget the clubs, it has amazing restaurants, bars, boutiques, cafes, music, etc.

Itaewon is dirty and skeezy at night, too many hookers, ladyboys and drunks puking on the street. I'll take Hongdae and it's young crowd and chill bars anyday
