|
|
I would like to buy a car. I'm crazy, I know. Anyhoo, my Canadian DL expires in August -- plus it's a G2. Still, is there any hope that I can trick the driving bureau (whatever it's called over here; can't you tell how informed I am?) into giving me a valid license?
There's a sweet-ass Tico I got my eye on.

Just take your drivers licence down to the DMV you have to do a quick physical...(eye test) at a hospital.
I got mine in about 30 minutes including the trip to the hospital. |

Just go down to the centre in Samseong or any other major centre with your passport, driver's license and some photos and 10,000.
They gave me mine even though we drive on the other side of the road in England.
The physical consisted of doing two squats, along with twenty others in the room and clenching/unclenching my fist while squatting. Then spoon over the eye, read two letters, spoon over other eye, two more letters.
Picked up the license three days later.
Don't worry about when yours expires.
Why a Tico? Have you completely lost your senses? |

| Yes, to buy a Tico is actually in the Korean dictionary as a verb meaning to have become a complete nincompoop. |

I don't think it really matters, as long as your current license is valid. If it has expired (like mine had), then you've got one helluva dog and pony show to go through. Basically, you've gotta do a written test, an on site "course" test, and a road test to get your licenese. If your license is still valid, but it expires soon, go get your license now! Trust me....a lot easier.

Well a G2 is a probation license...don't think anyone picked that up.
If they actually check that, you are probably screwed.
I'd suggest TRY. If you get denied just take the Korean version of the test. If the crazyass people I see driving everyday can pass it, I am sure you can too.
Also DO NOT buy a Tico. Seriously, I'd hate to think of you and your lovely daughter/wife driving around in the piece of crap. Hoping you were joking.
You can PM if ya need any details/help etc. |

They wont check. I did this, and it took a few minutes, maybe like 15 or something, and I got my license. I didnt have a G2, but if I did, there was no time for them to have checked it anyway. JUst go and get your license. |

maybe a stupid question -
if i wanted to get a license assumed i still have a valid canadian one etc.
and i went down to the place and did the physical, does the fact that i wear glasses come into account?
i have a feeling i am going to get mocked for this one.

None of the above is true at the samseong office. No written test, course test and no road test. |

The test is in English, however, there is no English study material (or at least none that I could find). You only need to get 60% on the written test to pass, which I nailed exactly. Many of the questions are common sense, however, most I had to guess at due to lack of study material. I know how far away from the curb I'm supposed to park in Canada, but I didn't know if it was the same in Korea or not. If you fail, you can sign up and take it again in a day or two, I think.

Not that it matters now, as I have my license, but were you able to get a Korean license with an expired foregin license? Did they realize your license was expired? Just curious....

Not sure where you live, but I went to the driver's center near COEX in Seoul. They held my Canadian license for a week. I had to wait a week to pick up my Korean license. |
